United Discounts Award Tickets to Paradise

United Airlines Hawaii Sale

In celebration of 70 years of service, United Airlines if offering discounted award tickets to Hawaii.

Just in time for Cyber Monday, United is discounting economy class award travel to Hawaii by 20%. Round-trip saver awards to Hawaii, normally 45,000 miles round-trip, will be 36,000 miles during this promotion. Note the following date restrictions:

  • Book by December 08, 2017
  • Discount valid for travel between January 07 and March 10, 2018

Unfortunately, premium cabin redemptions are not discounted (not that I have seen any saver space anyway…). Saver economy class space is capacity-controlled, but much more readily available.

Is this a Good Deal?

Asking whether a mileage redemption is a “good deal” tends to be a very subjective question. While I prefer to use my miles for aspirational premium cabin redemptions I would never otherwise buy, I am not opposed to using my points for economy class when it makes sense.

Here, you’ll need to check the price of paid/revenue tickets to determine whether it makes sense. For example, 36,000 miles for an $11000 ticket is a heck of a better deal than 36,000 for a $4oo ticket.

I value United miles at about 1.7 cents each, meaning any value above 1.7 cents is a worthy redemption in my book.

Also note that this promotion is valid only for travel on United metal (United operated flights). United partners with Hawaiian Airlines for inter-island travel and offers these flights using miles as well. But these inter-island flights cannot be included on the same award…each segment will cost you an additional 7,000 miles.

CONCLUSION

Winter is a great time to visit Hawaii. If you are looking to use your miles to book economy class travel to Hawaii, now would be a great time to check united.com.
