United Airlines will launch new service between San Francisco and Dublin in 2020 using a 787. Will this new service impact the 787 build-up at Chicago O’Hare?
United’s New San Francisco – Dublin Service
United Airlines will launch year-around service between SFO and DUB in 2020, utilizing a single Boeing 787-8.
- UA852 Dublin to San Francisco dep 11:50AM arr 2:20PM
- UA853 San Francisco to Dublin dep 3:55PM arr 9:45AM+1
The new service will begin June 5, 2020 and will operate daily through October 23rd eastbound and October 24th westbound. The route is supposed to be year-around, but is currently out of the schedule after October 24th.
International Network Vice President Patrick Quayle stressed the tech connection of the new flights:
Dublin and the Silicon Valley are two regions synonymous with big tech. Many global tech companies have a major footprint in both regions, and they need a carrier with an extensive worldwide network to help conveniently connect their business. As the only U.S. airline to serve Ireland from the West Coast, United is uniquely suited to provide the connectivity these companies and economies need to continue thriving.
This service augments nonstop service on Aer Lingus, a partner (“frenemy”) of United.

Does United’s New Route Impact 787 Expansion In Chicago?
Last month, I shared about United’s plan to operate more 787s out of Chicago O’Hare (ORD). New 787 routes include:
- Brussels (starting on March 28, 2020)
- Frankfurt (starting on March 28, 2020)
- Munich (starting on March 28, 2020)
- Shanghai (starting in mid-May 2020)
- Beijing (starting in mid-June 2020)
- Sao Paulo (starting in autumn 2020)
- Tokyo Haneda (starting in autumn 2020)
Although Brussels, Frankfurt, and Munich now reflect the Dreamliner, Sao Paulo and the three Asian routes do not. I asked United if the additional 787 route from SFO would impact the 787 plan in Chicago. A spokesperson told me the new SFO-DUB route will have “no effect” on the ORD 787 plans. All routes slated for the 787 remain unchanged.

CONCLUSION
It’s exciting to see another new route from San Francisco, especially to one of my favorite countries in the world. I have a feeling this will be a very popular route and grow to daily service year-around. The new route will not impact 787 service from Chicago.
What was the point of this article? Why did you think that new Dublin route would effect Chicago’s 787?
I dont understand what you mean by “impact”. Your question/ concern imply that United’s schedulers and network planning people – the people responsible for forecasting new routes, scheduling them, and making sure the airplanes are available to fly them – overlooked the impact that adding a new SFO-DUB flight would have on the carrier’s resources. That kind of question actually dumbfounds me. So i’m really not sure the point you were trying to make with this post or this line of questioning. Did you actually think that United’s own staff didnt know what they were doing? Didnt have the capacity to understand the implications? I’m really not sure what you meant by “impact” and where you were going with this. The SFO-DUB planning isnt just a lark – it’s a plan that takes MONTHS (I should know, I’ve done the job at several US and foreign airlines) of study, analysis, and preparation. Resource impacts on the network are planned and forecasted many times. United made those announcements about 787 base at ORD knowing full well that this new flight was coming along, they just hadnt announced it yet. So to suggest that United didnt know what they were doing and potentially overlooked something really important tells me that you really dont have an understanding of the sophistication of the carrier’s processes. I do not see the value of this post.
United has stressed the nimbleness of its fleet; its ability to make changes on a short-term basis depending upon fluctuating market conditions.

Furthemore, United provided dates for 787 service to PEK, PVG, HND, and GRU from ORD. That was months ago. But while the aircraft swaps have been loaded for BRU, FRA, and MUC, the other routes still show a 787, even months later.
Thus, noting how quick United is to make changes to routes and aircrafts and how aircraft type has not been updated on four announced 787 routes, I found my question fair and worthy of further exploration.
I actually appreciate this article. United do have additional 787-9 and 787-10 to join its fleet in 2020.
I would like to know about whether any existing 787-8 routes will be up gauged to 787-9 or 797-10. Contrary to the 787-9/10, United only have 12 787-8 in its fleet. With the SFO-DUB to be flown by 787-8, I wonder any of the existing 787-8 routes may need to be switched to the 787-9 or 10.
With UA moving the 777 fleet out of ORD, what aircraft will be used for the ORD-OGG and ORD-HNL routes? I’ve noticed the ORD-OGG route is back to once a week for fall 2020, has this been officially announced?
I’m not following the point of this article, nothing was presented illustrating why this route would impact ORD. UA continues to take 787 deliveries in 2020 and is building up a 787 pilot base in DEN. Is this route going to impact DEN too?
If the explanation above doesn’t make it clear, I cannot help you.
