A Delicious Steak Dinner On US Airways

Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.

This week, I reminisce about a steak dinner I enjoyed on US Airways from Philadelphia to Munich in Envoy Class. It’s hard to find edible—let alone tasty—steak on an airplane, but US Airways pleasantly surprised me.

I’m in the midst of a vintage trip report to the Balkans from 2012. For my journey to Europe I flew US Airways, then a member of Star Alliance and long before the transition to oneworld and merger with American Airlines.

Everything about the dinner onboard was satisfying. The mixed nuts were warmed, the jumbo shrimp delicious, the bread hot, and the salad fresh. Even the French red wine was acceptable.

But the highlight was the steak. It was juicy, cooked medium, and had zero gristle. Good meat doesn’t require any sauce, so I was happy to only use the Béarnaise sauce on my asparagus, potatoes, and cooked tomato.

For dessert, ice cream or cheese were offered and I only had room left for ice cream, a tasty toffee ice cream served with a cappuccino.

I flew US Airways on the way back and also enjoyed another great lunch.

But that’s it…just two US Airways longhaul flights. From a culinary perspective, that makes me remorseful.

    Nice. How would you compare it with the food on American these days? Since it looks and you said tasted really good, I presume this was before the America West bunch arrived?

      I’d say about the same. I prefer AA’s good to UA’s, with some exceptions.

    Those are very 2012 phone photos!

    I think I last traveled first class on US Airways a few years before that, and was in first on Delta in 2011.
