Live and Let’s Fly Weekend Digest: December 17, 2016

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 17, 2016November 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

I have posted more this week than I have the previous several months combined…and am loving it. It is an amazing feeling to resurrect my dormant blog, and I am still just warming up!

To keep up with my weekly posts, which I hope to further increase in frequency in the new year, each Saturday I will post a weekly review of my posts for the week with a bit of additional commentary where appropriate.

I thank all of you for reading my blog on its new Boarding Area home this week and eagerly anticipate the days ahead. After finishing my marriage story posts, I will move on to a trip report recounting a month Heidi and I spent in Africa as part of the arduous visa process she had to go through in order to immigrate to the United States. I will also be rolling out weekly hotel and lounge reviews as I seek to purge the backlog has been growing (for years in some cases).

My pledge to you remains that I will do my best each day to bring you unique and fun content that will help you learn or at least make you chuckle.

Without further ado, here is a review of this week’s stories in a fashion similar to One Mile at a Time:

This post recounts my blogging journey over the last several years and how I finally arrived “home” at Boarding Area.

A Scary Flight on EgyptAir

I am a bit shocked over how popular this post has been. I would have liked my EgyptAir London to Cairo post to have been been more widely read, but the title must have sounded scandalous. While bad weather did make for an extremely bumpy flight and your heart cannot help but to pound during sudden altitude fluctuations, EgyptAir safely got me to Beirut.

A Love Affair with United Airlines

Keeping this blog positive, whenever possible, is a goal, and I wanted to set the context for why I write about United so often. From the feedback I received, many of you have a similar story about your relationship with United. Loyalty can be irrational at times and my history with United demonstrates that.

Going forward, however, while still writing about United frequently I intend to broaden out to include more frequent content concerning other carriers, especially Delta and American, focusing more on the loyalty side than on news.

Here’s Why I Support In-Flight Cell Phone Calls

emirates-onboard-phone-calls

I feel like Gary Leff and I are the only ones who actually support cell phone calls in-flight, based upon the flurry of e-mails, tweets, and comments this post received. My position was so contrarian I was asked to defend it on NPR’s On Point with a panel of travel insiders. It sure felt like five against one…

It still boggles my mind that the head of the Association of Flight Attendants would argue that terrorism concerns are a primary reason she opposes in-flight cell phones. I think that is a weak, fear-based argument that has no merit unless we are wiling to live in a security state (arguably, we already do…).

I chucked when Henry Harteveldt claimed that he has experienced cell phone rage in Europe. First off, I doubt it because I fly within Europe frequently and have never seen it or read about it. Secondly, most European carriers still do not allow cell phone usage in-flight.
