Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.
What I loved most on the my flight to Great Britain on a New Zealand carrier was the Los Angeles touches in the meal service.
Air New Zealand operates a Fifth Freedom flight between Los Angeles and London. I had the chance to fly in business class in late 2016. You can read my full trip report here.
Meal service began with mixed nuts and a smoked duck appetizer with balsamic glazed onions.
For the main course, I chose herb-crusted cod with roasted cauliflower, beans, and risoni pasta with fresh pomegranate seeds. Pomegranates are not exclusive to California, but I grew up with pomegranate trees and always associate them with Southern California.
For dessert I had a warm cherry tart with vanilla ice cream. Cherries are another California favorite.
Most of all, though, I enjoyed the spicy soft cheese omelet with roasted tomato and tomatillo salsa on top. It was something I would order in one of the many small cafés that dot Los Angeles.
CONCLUSION
Some airlines do such a poor job of incorporating local food into their menus (I’m looking at you, EgyptAir). But Air New Zealand did a wonderful job of offering Los Angeles ingredients in its tasty business class meals on my flight from LAX to LHR.

Nice SAT word in the title 🙂
I’m so glad that you figured out how to use the thesaurus!
I had no idea what sapid meant! Apparently it means “having a strong, pleasant taste.” Very cool!
That fish looks like a good choice; of course it’s great to see airlines trying to be creative with ingredients such as pomegranate, rather than the vapid crap that’s commonly served.
