Diversion: American Airlines First Class Passenger Attacks Flight Attendant When She Tells Him To Stop Vaping Onboard

An American Airlines flight from Milwaukee to Dallas diverted to Tulsa after a first class passenger purportedly became enraged when told to stop vaping onboard and responded by attacking the flight attendant.

American Airlines A319 Diverts After First Class Passenger Becomes Enraged After Being Told To Stop Vaping, Attacks Flight Attendant

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, on American Airlines flight AA1733 from Milwaukee (MKE) to Dallas – Fort Worth (DFW) aboard an Airbus A319 jet. According to PYOK:

  • The passenger was openly vaping in his first class seat
  • A flight attendant told him to stop, reminding him that vaping was a violation of AA rules and federal law
  • The warning “antagonized” the passenger
  • After accusing the flight attendant of making false allegations against him, he chased her into the forward galley
  • Other passengers jumped up to protect the flight attendant
  • The scuffle prompted the captain to request an emergency landing in Tulsa, Oklahoma (TUL) to drop off the unruly passenger.

The flight landed in Tulsa at 7:12 pm CT, then was back in the air by 8:22 pm, landing in Dallas 9:06 pm, only 32 minutes behind schedule.

Vaping is an interesting habit. It’s different than smoking tobacco in that the fumes are not nearly as noxious and in many cases not noticeable at all. I remember “back in the day” when Ryanair would sell vaping products onboard and invite people to use them during the flight…but only if you purchased the e-cigarettes directly from Ryanair!

But the rules are the rules….you can’t vape onboard…so there is no excuse here for the conduct of the passenger. Furthermore, it seems like he was given a warning…now he needs a huge bill for the cost of the diversion, including for gas and labor.

Hopefully charges will be filed for the assault. But probably just let the guy go with a slap on the wrist. Only way this stuff will stop is if law enforcement and airlines go hardcore on these offenders.

There is already severe ramifications. A lot of people don’t think of what can happen especially when they had a few drinks.

Vaping is the perfect application for Darwinism. People that vape will soon disappear and the Earth will have less dumb people.

      Yes, less dumb people.

Because dumb people — you know — those who can’t speak…. they are the real problem.

Not illiterate idiots or stupid people who misues simple English words.

Vaping during flights is an offence, but nothing condones threatening or intimidating airline staff. The passenger needs to be dealt with seriously. Pretty soon, we’re going to be flying with pilots in locked cockpits and no FAs because there’s just too much aggravation.

I assume you meant to write Tuesday September 4th. The 5th is tomorrow 🙂

He should be fined for the vaping and arrested for attacking the flight attendant.

I don’t know about the legality of such an agreement, but I’d love to see AA, DL, and UA agree that once jerks like this get banned by one, they get banned by all.

I hope the FA charges the offender. And American bills the pax for landing fee, gate fee, and fuel top up etc. As long as no one charges these people.. it will continue. Raise seat fares too.

That passenger should be slapped with the highest fees or penalties you can’t even vape in a restaurant’s patio let alone on board an airplane! What is it these days when people can’t even follow the rules? People, if you can’t even follow the rules, stay home!!!

I am concerned a passenger will get hurt coming to the aid of a FA. My husband would absolutely jump to assist a crew member getting assaulted,

It would be great turnabout if crew was trained in self defense and could put these jokers down.

With you entirely, vaping bad, but chasing a flight attendant and the need for passenger intervention makes this so much more frightening.

They can. But the force has to be appropriate to the threat. So in this case – just stop return to your set is sufficient.

This is an industry that needs a total overhaul. There is not enough space to list all of the complaints and problems we face when paying for a seat and a schedule we expect to be there. Bad manners poor parenting greedy airlines and life-threatening events are just a few. Nobody cares

Rule number one when vaping on a plane is to only do it in the loo OR when in a private J or F pod, preferably with a door. Otherwise you are asking for trouble.

Do you prefer if I’m raw dogging? If you don’t see it, smell it, or hear it…what business is it of yours what I do on a flight?

What will the bill be for this challenged flyer. Post it in the terminal to inform all that this type of flight disruption is very expensive and dangerous. Maybe the nightly news would cover for millions to see and hear.

Second hand vape is same as second hand smoke. There’s also a battery issue and it’s just not allowed.
