Once again, I flew Avianca Business Class so you will not have to…this time all the way from London to Bogota on the carrier’s flagship 787 Dreamliner. What an insult to every business class passenger…
Deplorable Avianca 787 Business Class
After a bad experience on Avianca from San Salvador to Los Angeles, I probably should have known better. The “business class” experience was really only a (slightly) more comfortable seat versus economy class. But in flying home from London, I noticed space via Bogota and thought I’d give Avianca another try.
Surely, the experience on a longhaul flight on the carrier’s flagship 787 would not be so bad, right?
Wrong…at least in terms of catering.
First, the good. The business class seat, a reverse herringbone style seat, was great. The comforter was also soft and there was individual air vents, so I slept well.
Second, the crew was nice. They have been given very little to work with and did the best they could. The flight attendant who worked my section was very friendly and clearly embarrassed by the current service levels onboard.
I figured something was up when I found this note on my seat:
This was dinner, served after takeoff:
That’s right, a crew meal with a packaged sandwich and packaged dessert in business class.
Even worse? Its was lukewarm – hot on the sides, cold in the middle.
Breakfast was served before landing – again, in an economy class container. At least this time the omelet was warm. Sadly, the coffee was just brown water without much flavor and the bread was cold and hard.
I’m sorry, but blaming your poor catering on the long hiatus in London service is simply absurd. Avianca had weeks to prepare for its return and could have easily worked with its caterer to provision proper business class meals, including salads and appetizers. Instead, we received a lukewarm crew meal.
I walked into the lavatory before landing and found it in a deplorable shape:
Shame on my fellow passengers for not cleaning up after themselves, but it was clear that the flight attendants had not checked up on the lavatory during the flight.

CONCLUSION
Well, at least I slept…many would argue that is the most important thing in international business class. But I appreciate a nicely-presented (and hot) meal and cannot believe how far Avianca has fallen. The carrier is a disgrace to Colombia and really needs to step it up.
It was relief to step onto my connection to Houston and actually receive a properly-plated meal:
Have you flown Avianca Business Class lately on a transatlantic flight? How was your experience?
Just trying to book a ticket with Life Miles was all the Avianca I ever needed.
I know what you mean. It’s unpredictable, to say the least. You have to be constantly on the lookout for available space. I don’t go to South America, so I use my LifeMiles to book Partner Awards to Asia. They HAWK and SELL a lot of miles online so their income must be stupendous from doing so. Partner awards are OK looking into 2023. 2022, not so much.
I would count myself as the top 1% of frequent flyers. Flying Avianca business class is a misnomer. So far below standards , no lounge access in major airports ( except BOG), meal services that most low cost carriers will find embarrassing. Dissatisfied crew without a smile. Etc
Just flew them rt to Madrid from medellin. Bad to the bone. Don’t waste your money or that iof your company.
I flew New Year’s Day 787 LAX to Bog, 10 horrible movies is all they showed and I had a pastrami sandwich with 2 slices of pastrami for NY Deli. I was the most pathetic business class experience I have ever had. What made matters worse is they canceled the NYE flight even though the plane and crew were in LA. So I had to incur the cost of a hotel that wasn’t reimbursed.
Avianca is similar to Spirit, a really cheap experience.
I had a similar bad experience concerning the AVIANCA business class cateriong on my flight from Bogota to Madrid.
I found the bed confortable and at least had a confortable sleep. The dinner was hopeless, I didn’t even try to taste it and gave the tray back. It was wporst than the worst economy food I ever had. I fully agree with Mathew and think that Avianca being Colombia International airline a bad reputation for Colombia and for the STAR Alliance.
What’s better this crap or united Italian ragu
This would have been better if it was hot.
Ves en patera, capullo
Well, Avianca’s CEO has boasted that they were able to transform it into a LCC while operating, as some kind of achievement. Maybe financial…
Sadly Avianca now is a flying circus.
Juan Valdez has clearly left the building.
Flew Avianca Business LAX-BOG a couple of years ago…not all that impressive. 2-2-2 config. Older A330. I’d go with COPA next time. Too bad about the 787…figured that would be better. Which it looks only partially at the moment.
I traveled from São Paulo – BRZ to Miami.
I was in Business Class, because did not have First.
The food was a lousy cold, really cold sandwich.
The flight attendants were very rude.
This was my first and last time in AVIANCA.
Lousy service.
A trip that should be 8 hrs. Became 14 hours, because when we landed in Bogota, after waiting 2 hours, they finally said that the plane that was going to take us to Miami had technical problems.
Shame on Avianca.
Just would like to add this happened last week.
It’s like ppl don’t get it, shockingly. A pandemic Just happened bringing plane travel to a halt, with delays, cancelations, lay offs and overall chaos all around the world because of those things. Do people not get it? It will take a while to pick up. And we’ve got this guy crying because of his meal wasn’t phenomenal or something.
Lol. Wrong blog, pal.
Travelguy38, open your own amazing blog and justify there your obviously short sight on travel issues. Here are the people that truly travel and know our things.
I never depend on an airplane for comfort or healthy food, I would never pay and hope to reach my destination that way. Flying, It’s just a way for me to get from point A to Point B.
I agree with this. Really don’t get what these people expect.
Well, Mexico. Make sure you bring your own water and food. Interestingly, Aero Mexico gave free alcohol and beer, in Economy, the last time I flew with them (it was the last time).
Oh sorry, Mexico is different from Columbia.
Columbia is different from Colombia too
What mileage program allowed you to book LHR-BOG-IAH as a single ticket?
You can book virtually whatever you want with Aeroplan as long as there is no major backtracking – it is just going to charge cumulatively based upon distance.
A Colombian airline that can’t make a proper cup of coffee? Juan Valdez and his donkey are rolling over in their grave.
It was a mule.
I’ve never actually thought about flying avianca. But I do love LifeMiles!!!!!
Why use aeroplan by the way? Was the itinerary not available on LifeMiles?
You are actually lucky.
We flew Avianca Lima to LAX and they served us the exact same snack box as economy. No extra meal, drinks, or service.
Not even pretending to be a business class; robbery in my view to charge and not deliver.
Damn. I am flying Avianca “business” from BCN to BOG in late Sept. after reading this, am not looking forward to the journey.
Very likely in their 330, which is on a 2-2-2 and is an incline recline. Is even worst.
What a blessed life that your biggest concern is not looking forward to flying business. Tough stuff you are going through over there.
People who pay hundreds extra for a premium service are entitled to complain when that service is sub-par. Take your jealousy elsewhere.
Last time i flew Avianca LAX BOG in business, i had same kind of catering but everything was cold and served in a box. In top of all, business class passengers boarded after economy class. Now, i fly LAX MIA CLO (COLOMBIA) with American Airlines, cheaper and much better. And if you’re lucky flying MIA LAX with the 777. you have acces to Flagship Lounge.
Avianca declared bankruptcy and has begun to move to a low cost carrier model. The national flights don’t have a business class (they block off an extra seat in the front for their upgraded service like European business class). While they still have international business class, the last flight I took in May BOG to Washington Dulles had a new seating arrangement with a downgraded business class (less room for the standard business class seats and not curtained off). The economy section looked like Spirit as far as legroom and misery factor. The exit row where I sat was probably a better option than the “business class” and we could use the bathrooms in front of the business class.
Pathetic! It really makes no sense to market an intercontinental business class product with business class seats at business class prices and making absolutely no effort on the catering. I also find it pretty surprising that they use ‘tu’ to address pax instead of ‘Usted’ which tends to be used more in Latin America than Spain.
It really makes me wonder why so many airlines get it so wrong. It’s not like the formula for long haul J is a secret.
Step 1 buy airplane. Fit with lie flat seats with each seat having aisle access. Check.
Step 2 Hire Caterer. Select Business class menu. Appropriate food and drinks. It’s not hard.
Step 3 hire and train crews. Again not hard.
Step 4 put tickets on sale and start collecting cash.
This won’t get you a world class product to be sure but it at least would give you an acceptable middle of the road product that won’t garner reviews like this one.
Agree.
I would also offer unlimited ramen as a snack. So easy to prepare and just serve it in a nice bowl with a garnish 🙂
Also surprised more airlines don’t utilize curtains like AF. EG LH
Settle down boys. SOME of you are throwing an international fit over someone else’s food & experience.
I took this flight a month ago and got more or less exactly the same food, including the “crew meal” being lukewarm! I got a large decent salad instead of a sandwich though but otherwise a disaster. I’d used Turkish Miles and Smiles (bargain at 52.5k) and was actually going to Bogota so I was happy enough with the seat and the bed but if I had paid cash I would have been furious
Luckily I was absolutely famished at LHR and had stuffed my face in the Singapore Airlines lounge
What lounge did you go to? Based on my experience anyone taking this flight should go first to Lufthansa if you arrive early and then to the B gates only at 8.30pm as AC & UA will be closed and SQ only accommodates their own flights before then
I was flying from London. I’m even more shocked the catering is the same from Bogota! Amazing…
I did both ways – exactly the same from London as you. ex-Bogota marginally better but still nowhere near international biz standards. A real shame as they’ve got the hardware
We have been satisfied Avianca clients, flying with them 3 or 4 times annually for the past 11 years. Stopped traveling during the Pandemic and decided in May 2021 it was safe to travel again. However we had the misfortune experiencing Avianca’s new “bare bones” business class service from San Jose Costa to Toronto… the stale breakfast wrap was inedible and served with a tiny bag of chips and package cookies… we were both incredibly hungry after landing in YYZ and couldn’t wait to get something to eat.
Fortunately we brought our own food on the return trip to San Jose and politely declined the dried up breakfast burrito bag od chips and packaged cookies. Two months after responding to Avianca’s customer satisfaction survey and letting them know how bad the “Business Class” experience was on our trip, yet still no one ftom Avianca has bothered to follow up… makes me wonder why bother giving comments when clearly they don’t care. Thankfully we have other options for travel.
i also complained about my trip from Spain to Bogota, i had the worse meal ever on board a long haul flight. They also only offered cheap wine and no beer on board. The flight entertaining was also one of the worse i have ever seen, Very few movies, Avianca charge expensive but are becoming low budget airline.
Then i took last week a flight from Cali to Cartagena and not even a coffee omor water, and the tickets very expensive. And if you want to make any changes in scedule tjey always want to charge, it doesnt matter if you have L fares. Very bad.
Yuck. The seats don’t look bad but the food looks like a Lean Cuisine. Not worth the mileage burn in my book. Getting an economy class ticket on AV would be a better deal than that.
“It was relief to step onto my connection to Houston and actually receive a properly-plated meal”
But weren’t you just complaining that United’s meals, while plated nicely, still weren’t all that good and that United needs to up their game, taste wise?
Shame about the food on Avianca. The cabin, seats, lounge, and bedding all seem good, while the service sounds decent. Guess it’s best to load up on food in the lounge pre-flight…
Flew their flagship route from Madrid to Bogotá last year. This is the sad reality of Avianca right now. In the end you pay for the seat, period. For us who live in Colombia, there’s not so much alternatives to fly to Europe, so they have more or less a captive market. At the right price, i would still fly them for a good seat, and bring my own food.
Did you receive the same meal in business class from Madrid?
No, the meal was bad but not plastic wrapped and properly plated. Pre landing snack was an inedible sandwich (and i’m not picky). They just had 1 bottle of scotch for a full cabin though.
Interesting. Thanks.
South America is barely better than Africa in terms of airline quality and infrastructure. And so many economies in that region about to go in the toilet, hard.
You should try LATAM.
Such a ridiculous comparison it doesn’t even warrant a further response
It’s so obvious that you haven’t travel to lat America, surely avianca have downgraded its once amazing service (10 y ago) but our infrastructure is one of the most advanced in region and highly recognized by international governments and programs. So, don’t throw all the negative thoughts if you haven’t visited us.
I agree with this comment.
Horrible. Volé en clase ejecutiva de madrid a bogotá y.mal muy mal.
Además en el aeropuerto de Armenia del Quindío esperé 4 horas a que aceptaran mi equipaje y me enviaron a la ultima fila
I flew 7 hours on their a330 from Bogota to los Angeles and there was nothing but a really bad sandwich
Same horrible experience on Business Class Santiago – Bogota (Round trip A330 and B787)
We just flew Avianca from MIA to SCL with a stopover in BOG. And we got even less. An old ham sandwich in a bag, a small bag of chips and water or soda. No booze. The seats on the 787 between MIA and BOG were comfortable but hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly and no pillow or blanket were available. We flew their A330 to SCL. Same meal and no breakfast before arrival. Not even coffee!! Just AWFUL
Imagine the remaining classes which I’ve flown? Always an unsatisfactory experience. Best practice says don’t fly with Avianca. If more people simply refused to fly them, even luggages would be free as was in the good old days with all airlines. We can if and but all we want, and unless we boycott them nothing will change. This goes for similar airlines.
It’s Colombias national carrier, easier said than done and not very realistic. So what, you want people to fly on some low cost carrier like Wingo, vivacolombia or any number of other companies that are actually, legit, not very good?
What it’s happening in London it’s the lack of catering staff, that’s why the bad presentation of the tray for business service. If you fly from BOG to LHR MAD BCN and MAD BCN to BOG you will see a huge difference. But flying in America is flying with a low cost, one service with one sandwich no sodas, just water and coffee. They say that they are changing and america service will be buy on board
But another reader said they also had a crew meal out of Bogota?
Just back from JFK-BOG-SCL round trip. Only food on 2 six hour connecting flights was sandwich and water, tea, or coffee served immediately after takeoff. Didn’t get crew meal or blankets on 787 flight in business. BAD!!!!!!!
But my flight was an 11-hour transatlantic flight! I received similar bad meals and service within the Americas, but was expecting more in a transatlantic flight.
Should have ordered a kosher meal flying out of London. Always amazing.
Instead of complaining like a spoiled brat realize you are doing something, flying from one continent to another, that many people in this world will never get to do, even in economy and feel grateful for your blessed lot in life that your biggest problem is a slightly underwhelming meal in a super comfortable seat. Some people are so freaking out of touch. Poor baby.
Booked 3 seats back in March 2021 LHR BOG in Economy for Xmas 2021. Covid shut down the route and Avianca forced us to pay so we could change the trip to July 22. Every month we had a scheduled change. Spent hours on the phone to muppets in Salvador trying to update the bookings. Then a week before our flight to BOG, John Holland Kaye decided to introduce a passenger cap per flight and lovely Avianca emailed us to say our flight was going to be 2 weeks late. We called Avianca again and they didn’t give a you know what. No solutions were offered, didn’t sound sympathetic and we had to fork out an extra 1000 pounds on flights to Madrid on easyjet to catch one of their Mad Bog flights. On board, dinner was disgusting, a small container with mash potatoe and 4 little pieces of chicken, a hard piece of bread and a chocolate pudding. Asked for a beer and was only offered a cheap wine and a glass of water. Not once did they provide water or juice up and down the aisles. If you wanted a drink, you have to make your way down to their galley. All they have on offer is water and an orange juice. No snacks. Breakfast was disgusting, a scrambled egg with 3 cherry tomatoes. So bad was the meal service, I had to take photos to load up on my Instagram. Dreading our return journey, as I have a gut feeling those Fkrs are going to offload us again. It seems no one is able to take them to court in Colombia, so I’m going to take them to the small claims court once back in the UK. They should really stop flying to Europe and concentrate in the Latin America market as a LCC. Or better still go bankrupt! They dont deserved the role of being a national carrier.
Please post Instagram link with photos. I’m curious.
Avianca = LOW VALUE, simple as that no even a LCC.
In the Americas I recommend to never fly in Avianca. Much much better Copa, Aeromexico or the US legacies. Really sad what happend with Avianca, no strategy, no value proposition.
I buy (and use) Lifemiles frequently. As a matter of fact, my adult daughter is right now en route to London from EWR on UA Polaris, 60k Lifemiles. A Bargain with a capital B.
What is NOT a bargain is flying from FLL>BOG>EZE and being served a white bread ham sandwich and potato chips as the main meal. I’m grateful the fare was only 41k miles and a flatbed seat. Otherwise, not again
Avianca has a systematic scam. I bought a ticket. Since I knew I might change my return, I payed extra attention to fees. It was saying that for making changes I had to pay $160 plus the change of flight class, if applicable. When I wanted to change it, they said the same class will not be available for a YEAR!!! And I have to pay $760 USD!!!
For anyone’s info, Avianca is not Colombia’s flagship anymore: In 2.010 it was incorporated with Star Alliance group / G. Efromovich. Shortly after that, ended sharing stocks with an heterogeneous holding (Seemingly) led by Air China / Chi.Com.Party’s flagship. I’d respectfully suggest frequent travelers, to think twice before traveling to Lat.Am. Now, most countries ruled under Cuba/Venezuela – like far.left govts. NO disrespect or pun intended to their respective natives.
I flew BOG-LHR and back again last month and completly agree with your comments, food was appaling. Drink service non existant, after ‘dinner’ drinks were a couple of sealed bottles for show. I managed to get two thimbles of wine ( obviously having to ask for the second) The only decent thing was the seat. The tip of the iceberg though was the 2 hour + delay in Bogota, but no lounge access because it shut 45 mins before the scheduled departure time.
At least on the return it was the singapore airlines lounge in LHR so I made sure me and my 8 year old son fed ourselves before our 10+ hour flight.
Perhaps Avianca should put their cabin crew on the same training course as First Choice had when they introduced their ‘premium’ cabin back in the 00’s that was a great way to start your holiday. I’m sure we had about 5 drinks rounds plus meals.
Did you have the “crew meals” out of Bogota as well or were your meals actually plated (but still pathetic)?
Just want to share one crucial point. Avianca is NOT a Colombian Airline. They move to Panama so they do not have to pay taxes in Colombia. Yes, the service is horrible, and agree with most of the replies.
I flew from Lax to Bogotá in June and honestly their meal service was not very good , but before that my trip to Colombia was American Airlines LAX to Miami then MIA to Bog and and in main cabin plus all you get was some cookies and soda or coffee. Mind you this is on the flight to Miami. The best Airline to fly to Colombia at least from LAX has been Copa while it’s not an outstanding meal its better than avianca. And I like the 737 max they use . But your meal looks like the one I was served in economy class in my Avianca flight in June.
I am currently GOLD on Avianca. As you can imagine I had my share of horrible flight experiences, uneadble “meals” in both Business and Economy and non working IFE. I still have a few flights with them in the coming months but plan on using all my LifeMiles (if possible) asap. And I will be gone for good.
Anyone knows another Star Alliance airline that would match my current GOLD status? When would be the best time to apply? I am happy to leave an airline that has becone the shadow of itself.
If you’re the flagship carrier of your country, it’s mandatory that you do all possible representing to the fullest.
That note is unacceptable when you didn’t have an objection publishing and collecting full business class funds – no matter the urge to restart a route-catering options is first – it shows that someone couldn’t care about the value of the guest ticket.
Is this what other airlines looks for to scoop your market share-protect your best interest Avianca – I’m totally disappointed!
Long time since I flew avianca. But maybe you should check out Latam. Has the monopoly and the food and service is atrocious. Their business class has taken a nose dive. Transatlantic ? I now prefer KLM or even Iberia.
Avianca is pure garbage. It’s sad they were able to con their way out of bankruptcy.
Any simple search would unveil horror stories about Avianca. I booked a biz class flight because it was cheap. Learned how awful it could be and canceled (fortunately I booked a refundable trip). It did take 6 months to get my $$ back but they were very, very helpful in getting me my refund. You get what you pay for. So if you want cheap fly Avianca. If you want some comfort, fly some other airline
I just flew Avianca business class BOG-MAD and wish I had read this review before booking…
what a horrific experience from beginning to end. Chaotic boarding process and rude gate attendants in Bogota and completely disinterested flight attendants who obviously couldn’t care less about customer service. The “dinner” they served was absolute garbage and barely edible (dried up, tasteless ravioli). Breakfast and coffee were extremely low quality as well. Literally the only good thing about the flight were the lay-flat seats (Boeing 787). The whole experience felt like economy class (though, actually, I’ve had much better food/service in economy on some airlines).
Anyway, this was by far my worst business class experience and I will never, ever book with Avianca again regardless of price. I hope they go bankrupt.
May I hask when your flight was? On Flyertalk someone posted pictures of their C meal on BOG-LHR in mid-July and it looked more or less like a regular (if not exactly special) Business Class meal. Would be weird if they since downgraded it again? Or maybe it’s because it was BOG-LHR and not LHR-BOG?
April.
You are absolutely right. Colombian here. AV used to be a source of pride for us. It is a disgrace how low it has fallen. Some idiot in upper management must have declared “let customers service go to hell”, we’ll extract $1 more per seat.
At least you did not have to use the call center. They moved it out of Colombia to some location in Central America and the one saving grace they still had went down the toilet.
Well…. this is awkward, just booked my flight with points from MDE to MAD in April 2023. Hope they can get a bit better by then. Ugh
I hope so!
I’d have to agree with Avianca’s business class going down the toilet, flew with them LHR-BOG-CTG May this year, I couldn’t believe the difference between now and December 2019 when I last used them.
In 2019 I clearly remember meals being served on plates, when you first boarded the plane, the crew would bring complementary drinks to your seat as well as hot towels and wipes.
Not anymore, the business class service is a skeleton of what it used to be, additionally flying out in 2023 the film selection was absolutely trash, I ended up watching some of the small screen episodes as they were much more entertaining.
As other commenters have pointed out, business class on Avianca’s national flights has been removed, all snacks must now be purchased(from what I’ve seen most folks don’t even bother even those in economy, the food trolley returns to the front as full as it left)
Unfortunately, Avianca is the only airline that flies directly from London to Colombia, you can choose other airlines but obviously that involves changing flights and layovers.
I remember when my friend first took me to Colombia from the US back in 2010, we flew economy MIA-BAQ and the service back then was more than reasonable.
BA years ago used to fly direct LHR-BOG but they stopped the service, until there’s competition on that particular flight path, I don’t see Avianca improving the quality of the service anytime soon, a damn shame indeed.
Was your meal, even recently, still served on disposable stuff or have they at least brought back ceramic plating?
I was lucky enough to snag Business Class on Avianca’s direct flights LAX-BOG July-Aug this year. They were operating under their contract with Wamos in the A330 2-2-2 config.
The Wamos crew is wonderful. Way more friendly and attentive than the AV crews I’ve experienced. I travel from LAX to BOG 2-3 times a year, always economy, so this was nice.
Mimosas, hot towels and great food. Yummy appetizers, three different options for dinner and also dessert.
I guess this was the last of that. So sad.
My last direct flight this month was canceled by Avianca (indefinitely, it would appear) and I had to make a stop in San Salvador. A330 double aisle with Wamos, wonderful crew, but SS is awful. Any duty free purchases you may have made during your journey will be taken away at the gate when you check back in for your connection. Despicable and a total lack of common sense. I wonder if the gate checkers are just getting away with it or this is actual SS policy. The only thing you can get through the gate is food to go purchased in the airport for immediate consumption, because there are no meals on the flight. Only for purchase SS to BOG, but not LAX to SS.
