Great Coffee In London

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 11, 2020November 14, 2023 16 Comments

Looking for the best coffee in London? You have many choices, but I found a cool little place with a memorable name…

After Christmas my family visited my sister-in-law in London. She lives in a gentrifying part of London near Tower Bridge. The days were fairly packed, but I was determined to carve out one hour for a nice cappuccino.

She recommend a place called Fuckoffe, within walking distance of her house in the Bermondsey neighborhood. The name was certainly memorable…but how would the coffee be?

The coffee shop is open from 7:00AM to 7:00PM each day, except on Sunday when it opens at 8:00AM:

Fuckoffee
163, 167 Bermondsey St, Bermondsey, London SE1 3UW, United Kingdom

Let’s again return to the name: there’s a big story behind that. Put simply, the name ruffled a lot of feathers.

a street with buildings and a tower

a storefront with a table and chairs

Anyway, inside I found a nice hipster, third wave coffee shop, exactly what I was looking for.

a man standing at a counter with a backpack

a room with a couch and a table with posters on the wall

a wall with posters and pictures

The cappuccino was amazing.

a cup of coffee with a face on the foam

a coffee cup with a face drawn on it

But there one huge problem. HUGE (at least for any coffee snob).

They have no ceramic cups…only paper cups. How ridiculous is that? Who wants to drink coffee out of a paper cup? Certainly not me.

Somehow, I survived. 😉

Would I go back? Absolutely–it was a superb cappuccino. But next time I’m bringing my own coffee cup…

What’s your favorite coffee shop in London?

Matthew, is there an easy way to search your blog for all the Coffee posts? I’d find it useful on my travels

      Willem,

Right at the top of the post.

Matthew’s blog is well organized 🙂

You are correct! But this is a recent new topic so I have to go back and add some of the old ones. In the meantime, I’d just search for “coffee” in the search box (upper right).

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford ( ..part of the University) has a small exhibition on the development of London’s coffee houses in C17th. Interesting ( but not worth a special trip, I was there for another exhibition, yesterday. Exquisite museum.
The day before I had lunch with a friend just around the corner from the site of that first coffee house in London ( C1660), in the covered market street in which quite a few Harry Potter scenes were filmed. They served great coffee, in real cups .

That’s a great shop, but you MUST go to Rosslyn Coffee

Matthew, given your penchant for delving into controversial topics. How about going into your opinion on coffee pods?

Oops, should have gone with a comma rather than a period. I knew I should have had some coffee earlier. How’s that for irony?

Lavazza are my favorite, followed by Nespresso Arpeggio, and finally illy. I would rather drink nothing than anything fron Keurig.

    1) No ceramic cups and 2) selling too much food — generally not good indicators, but finding great coffee in London isn’t that difficult in the last few years. Workshop Coffee has a few locations and is excellent. Finding great coffee on the WEEKENDS can be more of a challenge. Sometimes the good independent places are closed and you’re stuck with Costa or Starbucks.

Coffee recommendations in Frankfurt and Mainz would be appreciated 🙂

The Brompton Food Market in South Kensington has great cappuccino, and a nice garden in the back to sit and enjoy.

Cappuccinos in paper cups ok, but never espresso!
Is it a cost element (cleaning breakage) or a Vat issue – take away rather than drink in?

I used to live near Bermondsey and I found Fuckoffee overrated and trading on its novelty value (admittedly I do love their loyalty card). If you walk further down Bermondsey Street, you’ll come to place called Watchhouse Coffee which is much better.

      Do they offer “real” cups?

Last time I was there, yes.
