Great Coffee In Mombasa, Kenya

Matthew Klint Posted onMay 8, 2023November 13, 2023 14 Comments

I enjoyed a superb cup of coffee in Mombasa, Kenya and also found a place in the Old Town I hope to return to during my next visit.

Best Coffee In Mombasa, Kenya

After a long day, we stopped for a late-afternoon coffee at a café called Crave. Located in City Mall Nyali (the fanciest mall in Mombasa), the café featured a superb coffee menu and a large menu of food and drink.

At home, I typically will have two coffees in the morning and one in the afternoon. Here, it was approaching 6:00 pm and I still had not had my second cup of coffee. I ordered a double-shot cappuccino and was elated when it was presented with beautiful swan latte art and had a strong, rich taste.

One of my friends had a local Kenyan tea and did not like it.

Another friend was celebrating his birthday and we ordered him an ice cream topped in crumbled speculoos (Biscoff cookies) and sang happy birthday to him.

Another had a latte, which was also beautifully presented (even though he had already taken a few sips before I snapped the picture below.

I appreciated there was a little contraption on the table that had a “call button” (almost like a flight attendant call button) for service, including a special button to request the bill. I’d love to see this in the USA and Europe…

Across town, I missed out on an opportunity to try what many locals regard as the best coffee shop in Mombasa.

Jahazi is located near Fort Jesus in Old Town, a beautiful enclave of Mombasa that hearkens back to the city’s Arab and European colonial roots. We walked through Old Town at 7:30 am in the morning and the shop was not open yet, but when I return to Mombasa later this year I do plan to check it out.

CONCLUSION

Gourmet coffee is not widespread in Mombasa, but it is catching on. Right now, your best bet for great coffee are Crave or Jahazi, though I would welcome any other suggestions below. When I return later this year, I will update this post with pictures from Jahazi.

Your picture in that reflection cracks me up. I can’t tell whether you are about to cry tears of joy or experience the big O at the sight of that coffee machine.

Your friend may not have liked that local tea, but kudos to him for trying it.

Did they not like the Kenyan tea because of the typical Kenyan preparation of adding a LOT of milk and sugar to it?

      Yes indeed.

I also had a good experience each time I went there until last time when I don’t know whether they have changed the management, because there were new faces of employees.
The coffee was good but they delayed samosas so much while lying to us they were ready. I took them for take away to eat later only to find them soggy full of oil.
I had taken a friend because I wanted to show them the best coffee place in town. (Crave)
Unfortunately due to that experience I don’t think we’ll be going back.

Greetings from Jahazi Cafe in Old Town. This place is truly awesome. You’re going to want to try the Swahili coffee (and the Biryani) next time you’re here.

Unfortunately the roads are still atrocious.
