A United Airlines 737-800 unexpectedly diverted to Virginia after a passenger suffered a “biohazard” incident onboard. While United has refused to clarify any specifics about the incident, Live And Let’s Fly has learned what happened onboard…and I’d say the emergency landing was more than justified.
Biohazard “Bomb” Forces Diversion Of United Airlines 737-800 After Passengers And Crew Overwhelmed By Stench
United flight UA2477 from Houston (IAH) to Boston (BOS) diverted to Washington Dulles (IAD) on Sunday, July 28, 2024 after a passenger suffered a “medical issue” onboard. Based on Air Traffic Control communications, the pilots declared “with this kind of being a biohazard, I think we need to get this plane on the ground ASAP.”
“I talked to the crew and it sounds like it’s quite bad back there, it’s still really bad. The crew is vomiting, and passengers all around are asking for masks.”
You can listen to the ATC audio here:
United Airlines crew and passengers vomiting due to a “biohazard” from a passenger and flight diverted to Dulles as UA2477 (Boeing 737-800 IAH-BOS) this afternoon.
Big thanks to Bill B. for sharing the audio and @RadarBoxCom for tracking. pic.twitter.com/LOojAnsbZH

The flight declared an emergency and landed at Washington Dulles, a hub for United in Northern Virginia. No medical assistance was requested upon landing.
What was the nature of the biohazard? Bodily fluid? United is not providing more details:
United flight UA2477 (Houston – Boston), diverted to Washington-Dulles after a customer experienced a medical issue. The aircraft is currently undergoing a deep clean and we are working to get customers on their way to Boston soon.
Live And Let’s Fly has learned that the cause of the diversion was a burst colostomy bag. A colostomy bag attaches to the stoma to collect feces…
And on that basis, it is no surprise why so many crewmembers and passengers became sick. Imagine that occurring in a confined metal tube in economy class…
I’m sure it was even more horrible for the passenger whose colostomy bag exploded…
CONCLUSION
A United flight diverted after a colostomy bag burst during the flight, creating such a mess the aircraft had to undergo a deep cleaning. Passengers ultimately made it to Boston a few hours late…it is not clear if the “biohazard” passenger also continued on the flight.
A colostomy bag is a foul odor.
Google philly sidecar.
Oh Sh!t!
I wonder what went wrong here. These bags do not simply burst unless something was done wrong. Could the pressure inside the plane be a factor? Did the person let the bag get too full? Was the bag placed correctly?
Apparently the vents or filter can clog. Air travel does make folks a little gassy
Nurse neighbor had a patient on a bus with a bag that ballooned and was about to burst. Bus driver would not pull over. Bus driver was really sorry later. Everyone was sorry.
Why is this person flying? They lost at this portion of their life, so the cost is staying home and taking care of themselves. Their selfish decision ruined the days of many other individuals and cost UA a lot of money.
Sadly this entitlement type a##hole is far too common in today’s America.
@Dave Edwards: I am sorry but your comments is very wrong and you have no understanding of the situation. You should get informed before making a comment like this.
“Why is this person flying? They lost at this portion of their life” Lost? Really? I was on a colostomy bag myself for a full year over 30 years ago. It was necessary due to a life threatening surgery I had to do do it and the colostomy bag was the only option to try to save me. I carried it for 1 year and it was very traumatic but I handled it in a very good way. No, it never burst on me but the colostomy was then reverted and since then I got married, had kids, traveled over 5MM miles all over the world so nothing in my life was lost because of that.
Thank you Santastico for speaking up about such a rude and insensitive comment. My brother in law has a colostomy bag as a result of Stage 4 Con cancer and it is something we all try and deal with with love and patience. I’m sure that passenger was mortified and as well as not feeling well. He has every right to travel and do whatever his health will allow him to do. Wish more people were like you!
You wish more people ended up with bags like Santi? Who is the horrible individual here? Jesus lady, that is just hateful wishing it on others.
She was not wishing more people had colostomy bags. She was wishing more people were kind and patient like Santastico. Your reading comprehension is atrocious.
Thanks Santastico for sharing your own personal experience with such a device, and for being the grown up in the room.
And another insensitive, childish, bitter, angry comment from ‘Dave Edwards’….big surprise. Just imagine the miserable life she must live to provide us with daily angry, negative, selfish and narcissistic comments. No matter what curve ball life throws at you there’s always someone else to blame or complain about.
And just give her a minute, she’s going to come back and blame this all on Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden, Disney, Kamala Harris, or Hilary Clinton any moment.
As I’ve said before, Russia and North Korea are still accepting new residents ‘Dave Edwards’….this would never happen there because they don’t have the Obamacare and this person would most likely not be around…..
Why would I blame this on Biden? Everyone knows he just sh#ts his pants. And we also know Mayor Pete would end his life if he couldn’t take c#ck in the ass.
Some of you just don’t think stuff out before you post. Then again, you don’t think before you vote either. Next thing you will try and tell us a ho best known for who she s#cked off is the best candidate for the future.
Nothing changes and I’m happy you survived that portion of your life. But flying when someone has a sh#tbag is selfish. And your case shows people can get past it and live a normal life. So stop being selfish during that period when you “lost”.
“What are all these sick people doing in my hospital?”
Dave , sorry, you’re the entitle a hole.
That is very compassionate of you Dave.
Thank you my friend for always being to voice of reason on this site!
I try my best good sir!
Would your opinion change if it was later revealed that the passenger was a veteran who suffered the abdominal wounds in combat while serving the country, thereby requiring a colostomy?
No, but they would then be an American Hero that still shouldn’t be flying a commercial aircraft with their sh#tbag.
FAs vomiting because they were shocked at the sight of feces shows they are not suitable for the job. Be tough.
I’d imagine if this bag burst it was full and the smell may have been unberable.
Pour the colostomy contents over a plate of spaghetti and BINGO, now you have an American Airlines first class meal.
Spaghetti with Upper GI bleed
Yikes.
LOL 🙂
A colostomy bag my a**!!!
Derek are you serious? …this is now not the flight attendants fault STFU ..what a tool
This is the most uninformed, ableist article I’v read in a minute. Did you imagine, for even a second, the person with the colostomy bag who either survived a life-threatening surgery or cancer, and is traveling despite that ordeal? Did you even imagine if they were flying to Boston for that treatment? How do you think they felt after this incident, seeing words like “gross” affiliated with their body? How would you feel? Would this same article have been written if a prosthetic fell into the aisle? If someone’s glass eye fell out? If a trach tube malfunctioned? Shame on you.
