Nasty, Hair-Pulling Brawl Over Overhead Bin Space

Somehow I missed this earlier in the week, but the video below brings disputes over overhead bin space to a whole new level. All I can say is that fighting with fellow passengers concerning overhead bin space is always a fool’s errand.

Hair-Pulling Brawl Over Overhead Bin Space On Tunis Air

Some background: On April 10th, passengers boarded Tunis Air flight TU216 from Tunis (TUN) to Istanbul (IST). The Airbus A320 was scheduled to leave at 4:55pm. Whilst boarding, a kerfuffle broke out over the allocation of overhead bin space. A full fight broke out.

It is not clear who the instigators were, but a male and female passenger had to be separated by flight attendants as they yelled and lunged at one another. At one point, the male passenger grabs the female passenger by her hair, pulls her backwards, then punches her. Several other passengers became involved in the brawl.

Be sure to turn your sound up:

The skirmish delayed the flight by just over two hours. The flight attendants, both male wearing suit coats in the video above, were apparently taunted and harassed for stepping in.

It is not clear if any arrests were made or if the offending passengers were removed, though they now face prosecution.

A Tunis Air spokesperson noted:

An investigation has been opened and that the passengers, at the origin of the incident, could be the subject of prosecution.

This fight caused a delay of five hours and financial losses were suffered by the company.

Judging by the comments in this post, overhead bin space is indeed a contentious issue.

CONCLUSION

I don’t share this story because it is entertaining. Truly, it is a timely reminder–especially as airplanes fill up again–that overhead bin space is shared space and that if someone brings on too much carry-on baggage, take it up with the flight attendant or just leave it alone. I strongly discourage anyone from engaging directly with the offender.

It is simply ridiculous what people bring inside planes. With airlines charging for checked bags you see more and more people bringing huge and very heavy bags into the plane so events like this one are not surprising. It delays getting in and out of the plane since people spend a lot of time trying to fit bags that actually don’t fit.

It’s actually really sad and indicative of so much of society losing control, any sense of propriety or mildness. Instead they all start physically attacking/ screaming at each other, dragging others into the fray and upsetting people just wanting to get going on their flight. In the end what does it solve….right, absolutely nothing. Some will come out of it with a sense of retaliation and vindictive “winning” and (hopefully) some will have come out of it feeling bad that they participated or instigated – FOR OVERHEAD BIN SPACE !!! My God, if you can’t handle that problem, what do these people do when they experience disappointment in real serious matters in their lives ?

This is while we shouldn’t have had any restrictions due to COVID and let it thin the herd, so to speak. There are too many people and let’s face it most of them are trash and the world would be better off if COVID had taken out like 5% of them. We should all be patting ourselves on the back for destroying the world economy so people didn’t die from a virus that they could have very easily protected themselves from with common sense. Not to mention, the virus far disproportionately affected people over 80 and obese people, but sure lock down everyone – why let healthy people under 30 enjoy their lives or let 12 year old develop the school and social skills that can only be cultivated at that age.

This will not be a popular post… but as I observe the overhead rule not being adhered to and the length it takes to deplane if not in Business or First, I would like to see a $25 charge for a carry-on (1 only) and luggage charges decrease by 50%! Stop the freebie overhead and hopefully this will speed up deplaning and this disgusting behavior.

Not surprised given the nationalities involved — how do people live like that? My favorite part is when the male FA (let’s call him “Buster”) tries to squeeze through the aisle to put and end to things. I didn’t know they made seat belt extenders for the jump seats!
