Amsterdam is an excellent coffee city, but Schiphol Airport leaves much to be desired. However, I did find some good coffee there earlier this week.
The coffee machine is ubiquitous at AMS. Nearly every restaurant, lounge, or bar, big and small, has an automated coffee machine. And while some of these machines dispense far better coffee than others, there’s nothing like the personal touch of one of those beautiful Italian machines that baristas use to make coffee.
In Amsterdam, I found a great coffee shop called Café Chocolat. It is located in the Schengen Zone, near where the B-gates begin in Lounge 1. Best of all, it is open 24/7 so it does not matter what time you are passing through.
It was 8:00 AM and I ordered a cappuccino, which cost about 4EUR and came with a chocolate truffle.
Would it be okay? Europeans tend to use UHT Milk, which I find has a distinctly bad taste and can ruin an otherwise good cappuccino. While it probably was still UHT milk, the coffee was very good.
I took advantage of free wi-fi and plugs while I sat for a few minutes and enjoyed my coffee in a terrace-like atmosphere.
CONCLUSION
It’s nice to start (or end) the day with a tasty cup of coffee. Café Chocolat at AMS satisfied me nicely.
That place also makes amazing triple chocolate muffins. Highly recommended.
That is my spot every month when I connect through Schiphol. Great coffee and pastries and amazing Belgian chocolate. Is it really open 24/7? On my way back to the US I usually land late (9:30PM) at Schiphol and go to the airport hotel to fly our next day and I am always surprised how dead that airport is in the evening. Thus, I am surprised to learn they are always open.
