Boyfriend Proposes To FA Onboard, FA Is Fired

A flight attendant may have gained a fiancé, but she just lost her job because of him…

Her boyfriend had a special surprise. His girlfriend was a flight attendant for China Eastern Airlines and traveling from Xi’an and Yinchuan. He decided to join her.

But he did more than that. In the middle of the flight, he dropped to his knees and proposed to her. She accepted.

The FA appeared genuinely surprised, telling passengers on the FA:

I really didn’t know my boyfriend will be proposing to me on this flight, thanks for being my witnesses.

It’s a cute story. But China Eastern was not amused and fired the FA, though the firing just occurred despite the proposal taking place in May. The airline called it an “irresponsible act that jeopardised the security of passengers.”

And what does Chinese media do with something like this? Some expressed outrage, but many Weibo users backed China Eastern:

“Go home to be a family cook. The airline fulfilled the plans of her boyfriend.”

or

“After marriage, it is not easy to fly again. The grounding is actually a good thing for these two lovers.”

Right…

CONCLUSION

I find this is a very sad story. First, the FA was not responsible for her boyfriend’s actions. Second, I don’t see how the proposal jeopardized flight safety. Instead, I see this move as a mean-spirited act of intimidation by China Eastern. Meanwhile, smoking goes unpunished…

As I said on a different site, at least she wasn’t “disappeared” like Fan Bingbing. Still, crappy move by the airline.

This might be a case of Western perceptions being applied to non-Western cultures.

I don’t necessarily back China Eastern’s handling, but can understand the desire to maintain corporate composure and “public face.”

The Sina Weibo responses highlight the more conservative basis that China Eastern primarily serves.
