Christmas Dinner in Lufthansa First Class

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 21, 2016January 9, 2017 7 Comments

Christmas is coming on Sunday, so for this week’s Matthew’s Meal of the Week I am recalling a memorable Christmas dinner I enjoyed in Lufthansa First Class in late 2014.

Each November and December, Lufthansa offers a traditional German Christmas dish on its menu: roast goose with red cabbage and potato dumplings.

When Heidi and I moved from Germany to the United States we flew from Frankfurt to Seattle in Lufthansa First Class on LH490 before connecting to Los Angeles.

I was a bit skeptical about ordering goose, but Heidi strongly recommended that I try it out (not that she would eat it), and the wonderful FAs seconded and thirded her recommendation.

As usual, the meal started with an amuse bouche served directly after takeoff followed by a caviar course. Heidi does not like caviar but I enjoy it.

Then more appetizers:

Hot goulash soup was served next followed by a green salad with a wonderful pumpkin vinaigrette (sounds weird, tasted great).

Then came the goose main course. Admittedly, it looked very appetizing, but would it be tasty?

Oh yes. Very tasty. A bit greasy, but worth every bite.

Heidi had fish:

We would not return to Germany for Christmas that year, so it was great to have a very traditional German Christmas dish.

But the meal was not over. Next came out two delectable desserts,

And finally, by special request, an Irish coffee that would give any Irish bar a run for its money:

Chocolate too:

I used to love everything about Lufthansa First Class except for the onboard food, but after the last few flights — this one especially — I can say the food is unique, delicious, and memorable. Lufthansa made an already special flight even more special by serving a delicious Christmas dinner a few weeks early.

Hi Joanna, I trust you will have a wonderful flight! Please report back if goose was on the menu. I’m not sure if it just something for flights departing from Germany or from all station during Nov/Dec.

I had the Christmas dinner at the FCT 12/17 and it was deliciously similar but better. Loved the Chestnut soup and Roasted Duck with caramelized red cabbage, potato dumpling, foie gras figaro.

I flew LH F JFK-FRA-RAK on Christmas last year and recall that the featured main dish on the sector out of New York was a holiday turkey with stuffing. Goose was offered in J on the late morning flight out of FRA. I only recall because my seatmate made quite a scene devouring it. I had no appetite to eat Goose for breakfast (and in any event keep kosher).

hm, hasn’t Lufthansa changed the FRA to SEA route to a route without first class for over two years?? Maybe you should state the dates for the trips you’re reporting. It seems you deliberately leave that information in order to ‘sell’ your reports as recent ones?!

Buzz, this was in November 2014 and I was not trying to hide the date. But I would not characterize this as a trip report — it is just a meal review and this weekly “Matthew’s Meal of the Week” series will feature meals both recent and much older than 2014.

On the other hand, LH F still is serving Christmas goose this month…as they do every year. LH continues to recycle favorites, which is a good thing. I was on a flight recently that had Königsberger Klopse on the Classic Menu: same dish I enjoyed six years ago in LH F.

Oh Matthew…fresh off a weekend trip to London, you have now inspired me to do a weekend trip to Germany next year just to try that goose! (Cue the eye roll from my wife.)
