I’ve flown Delta Air Lines transatlantic business class exactly once. It was a LHR-JFK flight in March 2013 back when Delta called business class Business Elite instead of Delta One (though I was on Delta Flight 1 that particular day!). My perfectly average onboard lunch will be the subject of this week’s Meal of the Week.
Like domestic flights, a menu and bottle of water was waiting at my seat as my boarded my 767-300 for New York.
Warmed cashews and almonds were served after takeoff.
Next came an appetizer plate with split pea soup and a very satisfying combo of prosciutto, cheese, artichoke, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes.
A large salad followed with arugula. I particularly appreciated the pecans!
So far, so good! I was loving this meal.
Then came the main course. Oh what a letdown. I ordered steak, which is generally dependable out of London. This one was bad news. Served with creamed spinach and mashed sweet potatoes, it certainly looked good. Sadly, the peppercorn sauce made the overcooked puck of beef taste even worse. I just cannot enjoy well-done beef.
Cheese and crackers followed as well as a nice ice cream sundae.
René or other regular Delta flyers can chime in: are Delta One meals still pretty much identical? I’m tempted to write up a flight review but not if meal service has changed. I know the seat are still identical.
My final verdict: a perfectly average lunch.
The steak, when medium (normally it is) is very very good. The sides looked sad I agree. When done right with better sides it is much better. The rest looks great to me. How did you like the wine choices? What was the other choice btw.
I’d kill for antipasti on AA…
That’s some strange looking prosciutto. Are you sure that’s what it was?
You’re right John. Looks more like bresaola.
I’ve flying MSP-LHR-MSP on Delta One at least once a month since last December and what you got is pretty consistent to what I get in every flight. The menu changes a bit every month and I would say I am happy with the number of options for entrees they offer. I usually never order steak on a plane since as you experienced it can be really bad is overcooked which is the case most of the times. I try to stick with the pasta or chicken since I think they are “safer” choices. Again, the appetizer, salad, soup and entrees change just a bit every month but the cheeses and ice cream sundae are the same since NWA. 🙁 I also find their wine selection a hit or miss. Sometimes they have good options but sometimes I prefer to drink sparkling water instead. At the end, although it is a pretty consistent service I find the overall Delta One experience boring and way overpriced. I always pay around $9k for the roundtrip (well, my company pays that for me) which at least gives me max of 75k miles you can get on a Delta flight.
You shouldn’t have to go with a “safe” option in a premium class. If you do, it means the catering is not up to par.
Definitely bresaola
So you’re telling me that a British caterer cooked a cut of meat to oblivion and then covered it in too much sauce to compensate?? I can’t possibly believe that!!
