Ethiopian Airlines Contacts Me (RE: “Wrong” Fare)

Matthew Klint Posted onApril 30, 2017April 30, 2017 9 Comments

Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner

Ethiopian Airlines has now reached out to me concerning the $776 r/t Bangkok to Toronto fare.

It was just two days ago that I wrote my ticket had been cancelled, though had heard nothing from the airline. Now this arrived via e-mail–

Dear Valued Customer,

Upon careful assessment, we have determined your ticket was done with wrong fare calculation. Ethiopian regrets the error and will offer you the following options:

1.      Refund full amount in the same form of payment and currency
2.      Make use of the ticket in economy class in the same itinerary by waiving additional charges.
3.      Utilize the value of the ticket as a payment to purchase a ticket on any Ethiopian route with the applicable additional charges if any,

Please let us know your preference and your ticket will be sent to you on a separate email. If you wish to cancel this ticket, kindly advise us and we will promptly cancel your reservation and process full refund.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and cordially expect your kindest understanding.

Regards,
Ethiopian Airlines Team

What an offensive letter. First, this was not a $0 fare, just a discount far less (for example) than the 90% off Garuda Indonesia promotion I took advantage of and was honored. Ethiopian concedes in the first sentence that the decision on this fare was made “upon careful assessment”, totally undermining an argument that this was clearly a mistake fare.

My options are to refund, fly the ticket in economy class, or use the value of the ticket as flight credit.

Ethiopian “cordially” expects my “kindest” understanding.

Nope. I don’t accept the concept of an airline unilaterally cancelling over a month after it was booked, credit card charged, and ticket issued.

Next up: I’ll write Ethiopian back.

Outside of suing for breach of contract you have really little recourse. This isn’t their first rodeo and they’ve developed a bit of a reputation – hence I told you so when you booked.

    Good luck with the CTA.

“The Agency has considered these arguments and finds that a reasonable person ought to have known that a total cost of approximately US$1000 for first and business class travel from Yangon to Eastern Canada is not simply a low ticket price, but a mistake.”

I somehow doubt they’re going to consider think “well, that’s unreasonable for Yangon but $776 is TOTALLY reasonable for Bangkok”.

      Feh, that should read:

I somehow doubt they’re going to think “well, that’s unreasonable for Yangon but $776 is TOTALLY reasonable for Bangkok”.

How is this ‘offensive’? Will hyperbole really get you what you want here?

You can try writing a letter. I suspect you’ll be about as successful as me begging my cat to stop helping himself to the food left on the table. (Hint: it doesn’t work.)

Sorry but, you pay peanuts…you get monkeys. I don’t know why you expected better from Ethiopian. Bunch of lousy rip-offs they are.
