You need to visit the Faroe Islands at least once in your lifetime because the photo essay below simply does not give the beauty of these islands justice. The breathtaking beauty of this place fused with its Scandinavian charm leaves me frequently thinking about when I will return.
Faroe Islands Photo Essay
I wasn’t sure how to present my “sightseeing” here and realized that the best way would simply be to showcase the beauty of this place via pictures. My advice is simple: just get in the car and drive. Pick a different direction each day and hop in the car. The beauty is you cannot even get lost: follow the roads and eventually you will be back where you started from.
Nevertheless, here are my recommendations of places you should not miss:
- Mulafossur waterfall
- Saksun village (Út á Lónna)
- Fossa waterfall
- Gjogv village
- Kirkjubøur village
- Tjørnuvík village
I’ve done no filtering or editing to the photos below:
For US readers, Atlantic Airways is launching once-weekly service from New York this summer. Do consider a trip, perhaps as a stop on the way to or way back from Europe.
I spent about 48 hours on the island over three days and two nights. A few more nights would have been most welcome. Plan on 3-5 days there.
As I look back on all my travel over the years, this trip ranks very high on my list of favorite destinations.
Couldn’t have been the only one to google, right?

Definitions from Oxford Languages
Doesn’t exactly sound beautiful though lol
I also did. I fully confess. Love that he straight on used it in the title. It came across more British cheeky to me than anything, and that’s a good thing.
And yet every dish of a meal is “delicious.”
As long as I don’t use tasty…
Nice photo essay as usual from you Matthew.
Thanks for that.
Love those adorable Faroe ponies! Beautiful photos
Nice travel photo tour of your visit.
How did you get photos of yourself taken? Some kind of tripod?
I was traveling with a friend.

You could have included another 1000 photos and I wouldn’t have tired of them. Spectacular.
Very kind. Thank you.
Beautiful, Matthew! Thank you for the photos. Inspiring me to plan it, as you said, on the way to or from Europe.
My daughter was to lead a student trip there a couple of years ago . . . until the organizer realized she couldn’t drive a stick shift . . . which was required. She has regretted it ever since.
Lovely, Thank you for the amazing post.
what are those circles in the water with the tanker looking ship? what are the sheep farmed for? Are they a special breed?
I believe those are fisheries, but perhaps someone else can correct me.
Really wonderful photo dump – thanks Matthew1
