Nuts Over Mixed Nuts? A Shell-Shocking Sale On First Class Airline Nuts

a couple of bowls of nuts

What happens when most flights are grounded and airlines stop serving meals in first class? The answer is a surplus of first class mixed nuts. But you if you love these delicious treats you can now stock up…at half off normal prices. That’s a shell-shocking price for mixed nuts.

Flight Cancellations Create First Class Nuts Surplus

Kim Peacock shares the problem:

“I have 50,000 pounds of nuts American Airlines and United didn’t want! We’re feeling sad. We’re sitting on a lot of nuts.”

She works for GNS Foods and GreatNuts.com, the supplier of mixed nuts for American Airlines for over 30 years.

But with flights cancelled and meal service cut, there’s a bit of surplus, to put it mildly.

Buy Your Favorite First Class Mixed Nuts For Less Than Half Price

You can buy both blends of mixed nuts currently offered on American Airlines at less than half normal prices. The “first class” blend contains:

  • almonds
  • cashews
  • pecans
  • pistachios

The “aloha” blend contains:

  • almonds
  • cashews
  • piña colada pecans
  • pineapple

You can buy as little as one bag, but six 1.25 pound bags will set you back $48.90, which works out to $6.52 per pound. That’s an incredible price considering there are pecans and pistachios in the mix. You can also mix and match if you like the aloha blend (I personally don’t…).

CONCLUSION

The problem is even worse. With baseball stadiums also closed to the public, peanuts are also not selling. As we love mixed nuts in our home, even as meal replacements, we decided to give GreatNuts some business today.

But I think Peackock gets it right when she questions why AA can serve a fruit and cheese plate, but not mixed nuts, which GNS has offered in individual bags:

“Yet on my last flight in first class, I was served a cheese-cracker-fruit-chocolate tray complete with plasticware. However, they can’t keep nuts?”

Sadly, nuts may be a long-term casualty of the pandemic. But you can stock up now at a very good price.

Are you going to stock up now on mixed nuts?

@ Matthew — The price is NOT incredible. Costco’s everyday price is $7.30 – 2% back = $7.25 per pound.

But does it come with pistachios? 😉

What I like about this mix is no Brazil nuts or hazelnuts.

The unsalted version is cashews, almonds, pistachios and pecans. The salted version is cashews, almonds, brasils, pecans and macadamias. We like to buy one of each and mix them together.

I did not know that. I will have to check it out next time. Only $7.30/lb? Great price.

It could be even cheaper, depending on the location. I think I saw it for either $6/lb or $6.40/lb, but it was definitely cheaper than this deal. I guess if you want the Aloha mix, this isn’t bad.

Not when I tried to checkout. They wanted almost $21 for a $25 order.

NVM, there is a AA nuts with free shipping at the bottom of their page.

If you add anything else to your order is when they tack on shipping.

Yeah I just bought some AA nuts. Shipping was free.

Glad you’re not being so snippy Matthew. I guess the business is going ok again.

Like most people, I imagine, this surplus of nuts never occurred to me. But now that I think about it, I wonder what first class airline suppliers are doing with surplus caviar and champagne?
