First Impressions: Aeromexico 787 Business Class

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 11, 2018November 14, 2023 14 Comments

My 11-hour flight from Mexico City to Paris aboard the Aeromexico 787-9 in business class was superb.

Boarding began late, but due to favorable tailwinds we still landed on time. I was first to board and found the 787 cabin immaculate and well-lit. I’d call the color scheme fairly pedestrian, but still sharp.

The flight attendants were exceptional: the purser did a lot of work herself, addressed me by surname, and was absolutely charming. Every member of the crew was very nice.

Dinner was served shortly after takeoff, beginning with a cheese course. I chose short ribs served with couscous, nuts, and spicy tomatillos for my main course. While the presentation was poor, the meat was spiced nicely and I loved the cooked nuts and tomatillos. Due to the late hour, the entire meal was served on a single tray.

Dessert choices included cake or three flavors of ice cream. I had a bit of chocolate ice cream.

All meals were served via cart:

I managed to sleep for about six hours.

When I woke up with a couple hours to go, I checked out the in-flight “buffet” in the middle of the business class cabin. Selections included soft drinks, water, coffee, sandwiches, nuts, and chips.

Breakfast was served before landing and included a nice omelet with black beans and red sauce. The cappuccino was excellent.

a cup of coffee with foam on a saucer

My only complaint was that the wi-fi did not work the entire flight, or at least each time I attempted to connect. At least the 11:55 P.M. CT departure represented an ideal time to be disconnected.

We landed on time in Paris and I saw the livery of our aircraft for the first time:

Impressive!

CONCLUSION

While my data set (only two flights ) is limited, I found my journey from Los Angeles to Paris via Mexico City on Aeromexico to be near-flawless. Aeromexico shorthaul and longhaul is a solid product that I will now recommend. Remember, Aeromexico has both 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft in the fleet. The 787-8 has different business class seats (less spacious 2-2-2) than featured above.

Was this a mileage run? Why MEX to Paris, aren’t you based out of LA?

I flew via Mexico City. Was not a mileage run, but a chance to review a new airline for the blog.

Glad you enjoyed the flight. Also happy to see a legitimate blanket that already makes Aeromexico business class a more compelling option than some of their Skyteam comrades. Was the shortrib falling apart at the touch of a fork, or overdone?

Short rib was very tender. I cut it with a fork. Still a bit dry for my taste, but good.

Why no review of how comfortable the seat was?…

Fair question. I’ll have more details in the full review, but it did not dawn on me to adddress the seat since it is a standard reverse herringbone. Seat is comfortable in all positions. One of my favorite business class seats.

I love the reverse herringbone set up. I’m also curious to see how comfortable the seat was.

Thank you for sharing this. How were the wines? Did they serve real champagne?

11 hours is a nice length for overnight flight; just sufficient to eat and get a decent sleep.

“Due to the late hour, the entire meal was served on a single tray.”

That’s not quite true, as both the cheese and dessert were offered separately.

    How is the IFE?

How was transiting in MEX? We’re doing a similar short- then long-haul (SFO-MEX-EZE and back) and I’ve heard horror stories about MEX transit.

Not bad at all. I’ll include details when I publish the full trip report. Took me only 10 minutes.

Glad you have a nice flight! … I have had pretty good experiences dining wise with them to be honest, I am a regular in the JFK-MEX run. You can see some of my pics on Instagram
