Five New Places I Want To Visit In Countries I’ve Already Traveled To

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 6, 2022November 14, 2023 10 Comments

Yesterday I outlined five new (for me) countries I hope to visit in 2022. Today, I outline five places I wish to visit in countries that I have already visited.

The world is complex and some places most consider separate countries are actually not separate countries but autonomous or semi-autonomous parts of another country. This year there are five such places I hope to travel to.

Of course I may just be dreaming. While some of the destinations below will no-doubt be possible, so much can change so quickly in our new pandemic world, so my hopes are not up.

Greenland (Denmark)

a rocky landscape with icebergs and mountains

An autonomous region of Denmark, Greenland looks beautiful and if anything like Longyearbyen, a place I definitely want to visit this year (after talking about it for so many years).

Faroe Islands (Denmark)

a group of houses in a green valley

The Faroe Islands are enchanting and this trip report from Out and Out has me looking forward to visiting. The chance to fly Atlantic Airways is icing on the cake.

Lhasa, Tibet (China)

a white building on a hill with Potala Palace in the background

Lhasa is intriguing from a geopolitical perspective. This Chinese-held territory requires special permission to visit and I’ve always wanted to visit Potala Palace. However, with China’s strict zero tolerance approach to COVID-19, it would take a miracle for me to visit here in 2022.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon (France)

Technically part of France, I’ve been wanting to visit this territory for more than a decade. With service to Paris on Air Saint-Pierre again returning this year, I hope to actually visit this year – maybe One Mile At A Time and I can fly to Paris together.

Tahiti (France)

a group of houses on water with a hammock in front of Bora Bora

I hope to take my wife on a child-free 4-5 day getaway. United is now serving Tahiti year-around so I would fly one direction on United and one on Air Tahiti Nui (hopefully without my nightmare coming to fruition). That said, I don’t have Hilton or Marriott points, so I’d have to get creative when it came to hotels.

CONCLUSION

In some respects, these places are higher on my bucket list than the five countries I outlined yesterday. Even so, we’ll see whether times and the pandemic permits a visit to any of these places in 2022.

Where do you want to visit in 2022?

This year’s going to be a slowdown year after averaging 4-5 3 week+ trips over the last 6 years.

Going to Stuttgart/Köln in March on a TK business class awards ticket, Quito (never been to South America before) for 2 weeks in September on Delta F using up some eCredits and back to Tbilisi for Christmas and New Years. Waiting to see what those prices are like and hoping TK has some good deals. Those LH/AF/BA/KL “business class” seats on a 4 hour flight are the worst.

New Year’s Eve this year in Tbilisi was absolutely nuts. I’ve never seen such a display.

Good thing Matthew did not write Tibet (Republic of China) or Beijing would have a huge temper tantrum and try to hurt Live and Let’s Fly.

I’d really like to go to St. Pierre just because it’s such a geographic oddity, and the flight to Paris sounds fun as heck. I nearly booked one when Ben posted about it, but then I read the entry requirements for the territory, and realized I’d be making a EUR 550 gamble, so maybe I’ll wait until 2023. I hope you are able to pull it off.

We flew Air Saint-Pierre from Sydney, Nova Scotia (on Cape Breton) to Saint-Pierre, then departed three days later on Air Saint-Pierre to St. John’s, Newfoundland. The plane for the flight from Sydney to FSP was very small and there we felt like we were in the cockpit with the pilots. So you don’t have to go the long way via Paris, unless of course that unique flight is part of the attraction.

Saint-Pierre et Miquelon is definitely worth a visit however you get there, and be sure to visit Miquelon as well as Saint-Pierre. We traveled across the water to Miquelon balancing on the edge of a Zodiac.

By far the best overnight accommodation in Saint-Pierre is a beautiful place called Nuits Saint-Pierre.

I have a dream of visiting Bora Bora in Tahiti. Every photo I see of the island makes me think that this island is my perfect tropical holiday. Sunny days. Warm seas. Over-water thatched cabins where staff bring things to me via boat. Beautiful sandy beaches. One day, I will do it…….

Have you ever been to the Azores, particularly the less populated islands? They remind me of the Faroe islands but are cheaper and generally more accessible

I’ve been to both St. Pierre and the Faroe Islands–two places in the North Atlantic that offer a taste of a remote experience. I feel like this area of the world is an undiscovered gem of natural beauty.

For St. Pierre- It was fun to take the boat from Fortune, NL to the island and get a really unique passport stamp on the return. It’s a 4 hour drive from St. John’s and there isn’t much to see on the way,but combining Newfoundland and St. Pierre into one trip is good because there isn’t a lot to see on St. Pierre.

The Faroe Islands is an amazing place and I hope to go back someday. You can’t miss that Atlantic Airways in addition to the main flights operates helicopter service at a subsidized rate that lets you visit (albeit in a public transit sort of way) to other helipads throughout the islands. Be Careful–it’s not touristy in any way but if you can hit the schedules right it’s a good way to get a scenic helicopter ride for less than $50. Also, there is a Mikkeler Bar in Torshavn that is the coziest place I’ve ever had a drink.
