Flying on Thai Airways is like stepping back in time to an era of full service. With excellent service onboard and full meals in economy class even on short flights, it is fun to fly on Thai even in the back of the plane. For my last Thai Airways flight, I pre-ordered a fruit platter, a meal option I wish more carriers would offer on this side of the globe.
Simple Yet Delicious: Fruit Platter Meal On Thai Airways
I once had a very dear client who swore by the fruit platters. Every flight she wanted me to order her one, which she found far better than Kosher meals. The problem was that this sort of meal is no longer an option on many North American or European carriers.
I recently few Thai Airways from Manila to Bangkok and saw a fruit platter as one of the special meal options, so I ordered one…in her honor. It is the first time in all m years of flying I have ever done so.
My special meal was loaded and indeed it was a fruit platter, a fruit patter, and nothing but a fruit patter…fruit served with fruit and a side of fruit, with fruit for dessert.
The fruit platter included a nice assortment of sliced apples, orange, watermelon, papaya, pineapple, dragon fruit, and grapes served in three different containers.
I wasn’t in the mood for heavy lunch and so this hit the spot quite nicely.
Thai Airways Offers A Huge Selection Of Special Meals
I was surprised (and impressed) by how many special meals Thai Airways offers. Look at these 20 options that Thai offers:

BLML | Soft meal. Recommended passengers with stomach or intestinal problems. |
CHML | Child meal for children aged 2 years and older. |

FPML | Fruit platter meal prepared with fresh fruits or dried fruits. |
GFML | Gluten free diet, avoids gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. |
HNML | Hindu meal containing lamb, fish or other meats. No beef, no veal and no pork. (Non-Vegetarian) |
AVML | Indian vegetarian meal. |
KSML | Kosher meal conforms to the requirements of Jewish dietary laws. |
LCML | Low calorie diet meal. |
LFML | Low fat / cholesterol meal. |
LSML | Low salt meal with minimum sodium content. |
MOML | Muslim meal, contains no pork, bacon, ham or alcohol. Cooked according to Halal rules. |

VJML | Vegetarian Jain meal / strict Indian vegetarian. Based on Jain customs. |
VLML | Non-strict vegetarian prepared with dairy products (eggs, cheese, fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts). |
VOML | Vegetarian oriental meal prepared in Chinese style. |
Next time, I’ll give the “seafood” meal a try.
CONCLUSION
The fruit platter is such a simple and refreshing meal. I know Alaska, American, Delta, and United all offer a fruit and cheese plate as one of their pre-order choices on many domestic flights, but I find those plates are mostly cheese and crackers with limited fruit. Here, this was a substantial portion of fruit and it was refreshing and light. I would love to see more of this.

My Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.
Fruit platters are one of my favorite Thai things!
@Maryland … Also a “spirit house” in the garden .
And thankfully no durian.
That’s for sure!
It would be an evacuation
I got a seafood meal in coach on Royal Brunei Airlines twice. Was delicious both times, but the real kicker was being served first in Row 29 or whatever, while my seatmates got their meals 45 minutes before landing and had to rush thru ‘em in a matter of minutes (BWN to Singapore)
I bet the seafood meal on Royal Brunei is not bad at all! I recall the calamari served with the regular menu:

Can I order the Meat Platter instead?
No
Economy on Thai is better then First Class on United.
Time to end the idiotic cabotage laws and let airlines compete in the US. The US3 airlines and their lazy-ass flight attendants need some competition and a kick in the ass.
My first reaction was, seriously, that’s all they give you on a flight of that length? But then I read through and saw you special ordered it intentionally. Too bad they didn’t have any jackfruit on that tray…
A fruit platter with a side of a fruit platter and a dessert of a fruit platter. I see how you say this hits the spot. Such a clever combination. And so true in spirit to the principles of Thai cuisine, which is all about combining seemingly contradictory ingredients into something harmonious that goes well together.
Nothing is too banal to push as a meal hitting the spot. We want that blog traffic.
I dream of a fruit platter. Even if one had to purchase it at the airport or onboard, it would make my day.
At least in North America, “fruit” seems to consist of sad, mushy melon and wrinkled grapes.
My travels don’t usually include Thailand, but I would deliberately choose an airline that offered a genuine, fresh fruit meal. The same for an airport terminal that offered a substantive fruit plate for purchase.
After all, these are airlines. They can fly in perfect fruits from every corner of the world.
I agree, the “fruit and cheese” plates seem to have a dried apricot or a few grapes; not much else.
The absolute low point are the institutional plastic fruit “cups” that some airlines serve as part of the pre-arrival meal on flights from the USA to Europe. These appear to be designed for prisons or primary schools. Nothing says “hospitality” like a shelf stable tub of sugar syrup with three cubes of disintegrating peaches.
Aegean used to have fruit platters in good old pre-Covid times. By far my favourite on board option… ever
It does look ok I guess. But I’m amazed to those of you who are into FOOD on an airplane flight. Now where’s the bathroom/Lavatory.
