Great Coffee In Malta

Even though I want to bring your attention to two great places for coffee in Malta, I have a confession.

Best Coffee In Malta

Usually one of the highlights of my travels around the world is seeking out the best third-wave or otherwise noteworthy coffee shops wherever I visit. In Malta, I somewhat failed.

Why? Because the coffee at the Hyatt Regency where we slept each night was too good to pass up.

Far from being the machine-dispensed sludge of an automatic coffee maker, the hotel had 1.) a great coffee machine and 2.) excellent baristas who whipped up perfect coffees in the morning:

a cup of coffee with a heart in the foam

a cup of coffee with a spoon

Unfortunately, my limit is three coffees per day and these were double-shot flat whites in the mornings, so after starting off my day with six shots of espresso, I was well-wired for the rest of the day.

Had the hotel coffee been bad, I know I would have visited Lot 61 Coffee Roasters, with locations in St. Julians (within walking distance of my hotel) and in Valletta. Next trip to Malta, I will do my best to resist the urge to keep ordering more coffee at the Hyatt so that I can branch out a bit.

We did make a stop at Caffe Cordina, one of the oldest cafés in Europe.

Caffe Cordina dates back to 1837, with a rich history and a gradual expansion that now includes a restaurant, tea room, pasticceria, coffee bar and gelateri. The family-run business moved to its present location in a former Valletta casino in 1944 after its old location was hit by a German bomb and has not looked back.

The kids loved the ice cream and the coffee was quite nice. If you’re looking for the specialty of the house, try a nougat: the recipe has not changed since the restaurant opened.

Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

CONLUSION

I was sorry to miss out on Lot 61, but look forward to trying it next time. In the meantime, Caffe Cordina offered a traditional coffee experience in the heart of Valletta. The biggest surprise, though, was how great the coffee was at the Hyatt Regency Malta.

You posted URL for the “Soap Cafe”. I love Malta and will be sure to check out the cafe the next time I’m there. I must have walked by this cafe several times when I’ve been in Valletta.

You’re right to be sorry to have missed out on tasting the coffee at Lot 61. It’s the best coffee I know in Malta, but will definitely try out the Hyatt Regency. By the way, you were only a few metres away from Lot 61 when you stopped at Cordina’s.
