Many have written about a hot deal currently available from Hong Kong Airlines, with business class airfare from Los Angeles to Southeast Asia pricing at economy class levels. But I haven’t seen any reports of stopovers on these tickets…until now.
I have a business trip to Hong Kong this fall, meaning this deal is perfectly timed. But I don’t need to go to Bangkok or Bali or Shanghai: I just want to go to Hong Kong. If I just skip the connection to SE Asia, the rest of my trip is cancelled. While $600 is still decent for a one-way business class ticket, I wanted my cake and to eat it too.
Usually on these sorts of deals, a stopover is not permitted and dramatically pumps up the fare. But not so here. I was able to work in a three-day stopover for about $80 more, which just represents the additional Hong Kong departure taxes.
I could have done an immediate turn in Bangkok, but instead will spend what amounts to one full day there and some change.
So if you want to use this great fare to go Hong Kong, you can: you’ll fly nonstop from Los Angeles on the way out, then Hong Kong back via Bangkok..and Hong Kong.
CONCLUSION
I have no idea if this is an error fare or a great sale, but book now and ask questions later. If you book on Orbitz or Expedia you will have 24 hours to cancel for a full refund.

Wow, congrats! Why book this via an OTA? Wouldn’t it make obtaining a refund more onerous, in the event that the tickets are cancelled by HKA?
I don’t like booking these sorts of sale fares directly with airlines.
Is there any way to arrange a Shanghai stopover? I’ve been trying and failing for a trip in early March.
I did DPS in early March.
Shanghai is one of the sale destination, so you can stay in Shanghai as long as you want.
