On my way back home from the Garuda trip, I spent one night in Amsterdam at the Andaz and my second night at the Hyatt Place near Schiphol Airport. I loved the Andaz — it was exactly what I expected. But the Hyatt Place was a pleasant surprise, for it was far better than I was expecting.
I’ve stayed in my fair share of Hyatt Places in the USA. They are very utilitarian hotels that are dependable and predictable. Here’s some pictures from a recent stay at the Hyatt Place in Colorado Springs, which perfectly characterizes just about all USA Hyatt Places:
Large room with a couch, small bathroom, complimentary breakfast. Not pictured: a very small fitness center. That’s it.
Hyatt Place Amsterdam Far More Upscale Than Hyatt Place in USA
I figured the experience would be identical in Amsterdam, particularly because the room was only 71EUR (compared to 270EUR at the Andaz … that was an easy choice with a morning flight the next day).
From central Amsterdam I took the train to the airport then caught a shuttle to the Hyatt Place. Pulling up, it looked much larger than a Hyatt Place in the USA:
And indeed it was. 330 rooms.
The agent who checked me in praised me many times for my Diamond status and was very proud to tell me about the property and its amenities. Unlike Hyatt Places in the USA, European Hyatt Places have a full-service restaurant in addition to the “kitchen/bar”. A much larger fitness center is also available. Room are fairly similar, though actually not as large as in the USA.
But the biggest difference was breakfast. The Hyatt Place Amsterdam had a seriously nice breakfast buffet in the morning (that helped to sway me not to upgrade on my United flight). High-quality ingredients and even good coffee.
CONCLUSION
As you can see, the Hyatt Place in Amsterdam is a step above every Hyatt Place in the USA I have ever stayed at. There are other European Hyatt Places in Yerevan, Armenia and two in London. For the price paid, the value was amazing.
I assume that breakfast is still included for all guests? (not just Diamonds)
Correct, free for all guests.
I love European hotel breakfasts!!
Very useful information indeed. Who would ever imagine European HPs would be so nice?
The fitness center pictured looks identical to the one at Hyatt place dc capitol… so maybe the newer us properties are getting the better fitness centers.
The breakfast looks really good!
Here’s my review, written in June.
