Last week was a first for me…I was upgraded to the general manager’s apartment at the Hyatt Regency Mainz.
Well, room 252 to be exact, a suite I did not even know existed (even though I’ve stayed dozens of times at this wonderful property in the Frankfurt region). At check-in, I was told, “Mr. Klint, we’ll put you in the apartment this time.”
Uh, “the” apartment?
“Yes, the GM’s apartment. He now lives offsite and we occasionally upgrade our Globalists or long-term guests to this room.”
The room was quite stylish, including a large living room, dining area, full kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. It also had a great view of the Rhine and street below. The only thing missing was a bathtub.
It got me thinking…if I was GM of a hotel, would I want to live onsite? Certainly the answer would depend upon the room, city, location, and spousal preferences. It is undeniably a great commute to the office.
But generally, one of the great joys of working a traditional job is being able to leave at the end of the day. Can you imagine if guests caught wind that the GM could be found in Room 252?
*Knock* *Knock*
I’d love an apartment like this in Mainz…I hope to buy one someday…but I just don’t think I’d want to live in my place of work as an employee.
CONCLUSION
I thought I knew this hotel well, but was surprised to find a new suite I did not even know existed. Now I know to ask for the apartment next time!

Is there a reason you always stay in Mainz when flying out of FRA vs at the Frankfurt Airport Hilton? I often find they are only 50EUR more than the hotels in Mainz and it makes the commute to the airport much easier, especially if taking an early flight.
Hi Brad, It has nothing to do with money. Mainz ends up costing more with the the taxi. We just love that hotel, the staff there, and our favorite restaurant.
which is…?
Da Vito (and I mean my favorite restaurant in Mainz)
I’m not sure I would list the room number, lest the next GM be disturbed by a reader.
