A Jetstar flight from Gold Coast to Adelaide was delayed last week thanks to a trespasser on the runway…a turtle.
As the plane was taxiing for takeoff, First Officer James Fuller noticed the turtle on the tarmac. He alerted Air Traffic Control and was given the clearance to wait.
Fuller told USA Today:
They aren’t the fastest-moving creatures. I’ve seen rabbits on the runway before, but in my four years flying with Jetstar, I’ve never seen a turtle on the tarmac. I want to thank customers for their patience while we gave the little fella right of way.
It’s rare that passengers enjoy a delay, but by all accounts the passengers did not mind this one at all. One passengers, Lachlan Burnet, posted on Jetstar’s Facebook page:
Wanted to give a shoutout to our flight crew … who brought the plane to a stop for a few minutes while taxiing at OOL to allow a gorgeous little turtle to cross the taxiway in front of the aircraft and make his way (yes, slowly – give him a break … It’s a turtle!) to the creek near the airport fence. Made mine and the other passengers’ day to see that. Lovely stuff, JQ pilots! Well played.
CONCLUSION
Imagine the captain announcing:
Uh folks, we are are delayed today due to a turtle crossing the tarmac. We’re going to let the little guy take his sweet time. Thanks for your understanding. Once airborne, I’ll do my best to make up the time lost.
Honestly, I would have smiled too.
So, turtles defeat not only hares but also airplanes? Man these things are scary!
Love it!! I wish there was a picture. 🙂
