KLM did something I did not expect on my recent flight from Amsterdam to Los Angeles in business class: it pulled off crispy and delicious French Fries onboard.
KLM’s “Flying Fries” Were Shockingly Good
My 11-hour flight from AMS-LAX offered a “Sky Break” menu which served as the mid-flight snack.

One of the selections was:
“Flying fries” with Zaanse mayonnaise and tomato ketchup
French Fries on a plane is always a risky bet. American Airlines and United Airlines struggled to pull it off while Delta Air Lines does not even bother with its Shake Shack burger (serving potato chips instead). Cathay Pacific certainly pulled it off well while Air Serbia’s effort was appreciated, but the fries were a bit soft (same on Aero Dili).
But of course I had to try them (and it didn’t help that I was quite hungry…the smoked salmon I had for lunch was delicious, but not very filling).
This was not an a la carte service, but a formal mid-flight service with flight attendants coming down both aisles in unison with the “Sky Break” snacks followed by a beverage cart.

Opening the KLM-branded blue box, I saw what appeared to be crispy French Fries…and indeed they were! The box itself is what the Fries are cooked in and is supposed to produce crispy fries in the aircraft’s convection ovens…and it worked. Mayonnaise and tomato ketchup were offered on the side.

Turning the box over, I saw these French Fries were made in the Netherlands and had a refreshingly simple ingredient list (one of the things I love about Europe). Frankly, I thought this 100 gram box of French Fries was one of the best 247 calories well spent. It was high in fat, but low in sugar…not bad.

I ate every last bite of this snack and almost asked for more, but then I remembered my round birthday was days away and I want to work hard in this decade not to get carried away and never become gluttonous. Everything in moderation…or something like that.
Yes, you’ll notice in the picture I had stroopwafel ice cream too…very, very good. Also recommended if you fly KLM.

This was one of the best mid-flight snacks I’ve had all year (too bad, for those who fly KLM regularly, the the famous KLM “burger” was not served with it…something in all my KLM trips I’ve never had the pleasure of trying).
Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.

Air fryers would produce the same effect too, wonder if it’s allowed on board and aircraft
if you add enough fat to anything and heat it high enough, you can make anything crispy.
Spoken like a true Southerner! 😉
