With passport control taking far less time than expected, I had enough time to head into Lisbon for coffee, brunch, and a short walk around the city before my afternoon flight to Frankfurt.
Coffee And Brunch In Lisbon
With plenty of time to spare after breezing through immigration and customs, I decided to head into Lisbon for a bite to eat and a stroll around town.
Lockers are available on the departures level at Lisbon Airport, and I dropped my bag in one for €6. The smaller lockers, which would have cost about half as much, were all taken, but €6 was a small price to pay to avoid lugging my bag around the city.

I took the Metro into town, getting off at Alameda before stopping at Sense, a café that specializes in both coffee and wine.

Having skipped breakfast onboard my flight, I was hungry and ordered a cortado and shakshuka. Both arrived quickly and both were excellent.

The café had no Wi-Fi and a “laptop & tablet are zone” stamped on each table.

But I recommend this place and the restrooms were also clean and smelled pleasant.

For “dessert,” I stopped at Manteigaria, famous for its pastel de nata, an egg custard tart pastry, optionally dusted with cinnamon, a must-have in Lisbon.

I only had one, but it was epically good…rich, warm, flaky, and absolutely worth the stop.
It was also an unusually pleasant summer day in Lisbon, with temperatures in the mid-70s F (about 24°C), far cooler than I would normally expect in August.
I walked by the new Andaz Lisbon, which I hope to stay at on a future visit. The location is superb and, from the outside at least, it looks like an excellent property, perhaps in the same vein as the Andaz Prague.

From there I continued toward the waterfront via the Rua Augusta Arch in the Praça do Comércio, where I snapped a few pictures. It was crowded with tourists, but Lisbon remains a beautiful city to wander through, even briefly. The 25 de Abril Bridge looks just like the Golden Gate Bridge…

And that was that.
I hopped back on the Metro, returned to the airport, and picked up my bag.

This was my first time back in Lisbon since New Year’s 2010. I wrote about that trip at the time, if you care to read one of my vintage trip reports…
How time flies.
This was an unexpected little treat during my trip, and I’m glad I went into Lisbon, even if only for a few hours.

Nossa! Those egg tarts are sooo good!!
