Eat Like An Astronaut on Lufthansa This Summer

Matthew Klint Posted onJuly 5, 2018November 14, 2023 3 Comments

You remember eating that freeze-dried “space” food growing up? When I was a kid, that was a big gimmick. Well, space food is back…on an airplane. If you’re flying Lufthansa Business Class this summer, you’ll have the option of eating like an astronaut.

Perhaps my headline should have been that LSG Sky Chefs, the same Lufthansa-owned company that caters many airlines also caters the International Space Station. That’s somewhat revealing…

But there’s more to the story. German astronaut Alexander Gerst is traveling to the International Space Station for six months. He’s taking “bonus” meals with him, which is what LSG created. Per Food & Wine, a “bonus” meal is “a special nostalgia-inducing treat for astronauts who’ve been away from home for a long time and crave familiar flavors.”

One of Gerst’s bonus meals is cheese spaetzle with bacon and chicken ragout. LSG will cater Lufthansa flights with the identical meal. This “bonus” meal will be available on longhaul flights departing Germany during July and August.

These pictures don’t exactly look gourmet, do they? Expect your meal to be plated onboard.

In addition to the chicken ragout, LSG developed five additional bonus meals for Gerst, including maultaschen, a Swabian-German ravioli-like dish which happens to be one of my favorite German foods.

CONCLUSION

These meals are packed with sodium and have a two-year shelf life, but I’m intrigued…we’ll see if I have the chance to try it.

I wonder if they have a freeze-dried Laugenbrötchen for you.

“LSG Sky Chefs, the same Lufthansa-owned company that caters many airlines also caters the International Space Station” – I didn’t know that; it explains so much about Lufthansa’s catering!
