Goodness, I should have eaten more slowly…but to feast on tacos in Mexico City is one of the great pleasures of life.
Mexico City Tacos
After arriving in Mexico City, the Uber ride to our hotel, the Hyatt Regency, took over an hour. After leaving our things, Augustine and I headed out for dinner.
Now, last time I was in Mexico City I enjoyed the most delicious vegan tacos at a place called Por Siempre (C. Manzanillo 18, Roma Nte.).
But that was a bit of a distance from the hotel, so instead we walked to a very popular place called La Casa del Pastor (A. Musset 3, Polanco).
Just after being seated, a tray of salsas was brought over…every one was delicious (most were hot for this Gringo…) and by the time dinner was over, there was very little left.
I ordered a pair of beef tacos, chicken tacos, chorizo tacos, and pork tacos to start…one for each of…and a cheese quesadilla for me.
So, so good!
We should have stopped there, but I was still feeling hungry so we ordered two steak tacos, two Birria tacos, and a chicken quesadilla.
By the time we polished those off, we were truly stuffed…
Note to self: eat slowly, even when you are ravenously hungry. I’m generally very good at moderating my food intake so as not to have that uncomfortable feeling of having eaten too much, but I failed here…the tacos were too good and we both inhaled them.
You could say it was criminal to spend 60 USD on tacos and quesadillas in Mexico City…and yes, I’ve spent 5 USD for delicious meals in the past…but it was late and we loved it.
Can you find better pricing elsewhere? Of course…but the menu here is great, service is excellent, and the food is delicious.
As penance, we walked back to the hotel (about 15 minutes away) instead of taking Uber….
I’m on the final portion of my SAS Million Mile Bonus trip, with a quick trip to Mexico that I’m sharing about real-time style.
Great review! Augustine is getting something out of this compared to endless flying and connecting without leaving the airport. This is a way to go to get 1M points.

So, you agree the price was criminal for tacos. Those tortillas cost a few cents plus a little bit of protein so they should be way cheaper. Now, the place looks crowded. Is that a spot where locals go to eat or more for tourists? I mean, I doubt locals in Mexico are spending USD60 to eat tacos.
There are plenty of upwardly mobile hipster locals in Mexico City who frequent trendier restaurants with higher prices– just like in LA, NY, Berlin, or Beijing. There’s more to Mexico than taco carts and street vendors.
Shhh, don’t ruin his narrative…
@wac … Perhaps “there is more to Mexico than taco carts and street vendors” … Perhaps so .
However , the blogger’s last stop around the world was for the tacos .
Those same street tacos are now just under $4 each in San Diego with only counter service.
And .10 cents each in Tijuana with only stand-up service .
Best I’ve seen lately in Juarez is MXN 35-40 for 4 with a coke, so if you’re getting them for MXN 2 each, you’re getting a deal.
Inflation .
Yes, that place is an Upscale taco place in Polanco. It’s a place for locals and some foreigners who know about it. You may find famous artists and upscale crowd there. You spend $60 for two there? Quite cheap, Mexico City is not a cheap place to eat in the upscale parts of town like Polanco where you were.
Who are the “famous artists” ?
Wow did you feel safe walking around at night? Also you drank the ice?!?
Yes!
This indulgence is what happens when deprived of taco love for so long. Very happy the journey is almost over. Big smile!
I’m so confused. Was it this trip you went to Por Siempre for the vegan tacos, or last trip?
No Por Siempre is from a prior trip. I just had to mention it, though, when talking about tacos in Mexico City.
The name for the uncomfortable feeling after eating too much food is called “mal de puerco” in México. You got: “bad of the pig (that eats too much)! “ Glad you enjoyed the city. For the person who asked about safety while walking at night, I’ve lived here many years and I feel safer here walking at night in the areas the article mention than I do in my home city in the US.
Great to know! I’ve been to MEX myself and was a little nervous, even with a friend. I should think most americans are too afraid to go to MEX!
Well damn I’d be willing to consider a trip to Mexico just for that
