A Hot Pastrami Sandwich On United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onApril 18, 2020November 14, 2023 7 Comments

Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.

During this time of shelter-in-place, there’s nothing like a delicious pastrami sandwich as a reminder of better times. For today’s Meal of the Week, I look back on one of the best airplane sandwiches I have ever had.

I’ve had many dozens, perhaps hundreds, of great sandwiches on United Airlines over the years. But one of the best sandwiches I ever had came on a flight from Denver to Los Angeles 13 years ago.

Ok, stop. Who cares about a sandwich I had in 2007? Well, first that’s what this weekly meal feature is about, which explores airline meals I have been served over the years. But more importantly for today, I am sure I am not the only one who has been looking back at old travel pictures, sometimes wistfully, during this time of social distancing. Furthermore, I am sure I am not the only one who finds eating comfort food like a hot pastrami sandwich particularly comforting when so much of our world has been turned upside down.

So back to the sandwich. The sandwich was served on white bread (sadly, not rye) and featured thickly-sliced, peppered pastrami and melted Swiss cheese. As if any more carbs were needed, it was served with a side of potatoes, bread roll, and brownie.

While the sandwich looks lonely without soup or salad, it was so delicious.

And it actually wasn’t my first meal on the flight, but my second…

The other choice on the flight was a chicken breast with fruit and prosciutto, a much more balanced meal. I had this first, but the chicken was cold and tasteless.

Since the cabin was half empty, I asked a flight attendant if there were any pastrami sandwiches leftover and she promptly brought one over.

CONCLUSION

Ironic that one of my favorite sandwich on United of all time was a rebound meal. But as I have come to appreciate smaller things like tacos and pastrami sandwiches during this time of lockdown, it brought back happy memories of this sandwich.
