In the midst of a scramble to get flights out between fierce winter storms, two planes have collided at New York JFK.

Kuwait Airways reports on Twitter:

تود الخطوط الجوية الكويتية التنويه بأن إحدى طائراتها من نوع B777 المخصصة لرحلة رقم ١١٨ (نيويورك-كويت) وأثناء وقوفها في المكان المخصص لها في مطار نيويورك قد تعرضت لحادث احتكاك من قبل طائرة تابعة لشركة طيران صينية مما تسبب بعدم إمكانية تشغيلها للرحلة المذكورة، وقد تم التعامل مع -١

Here’s Twitter’s English transition:

Kuwait Airways wishes to acknowledge that one of its aircraft of type B777 reserved for flight 118 (NY-Kuwait) and parked in place at the airport in New York had pranged friction by Chinese Airlines plane which caused by not being able to run for the expedition.

Per NBC News, the Kuwait Airways 777 collided with a China Southern 777.

The China Southern flight was being towed when the planes collided shortly after midnight, the FAA said. Both planes are Boeing 777s.

No passengers were onboard either aircraft.

In a follow-up tweet, Kuwait Airways confirmed there were no injuries and all affected passengers and crew members have been provided hotel accommodations for tonight.

Apparently, the right wing of the China Southern 777 hit the tail of the Kuwait Airways 777, damaging both aircraft.

CONCLUSION

Thankfully, there were no injuries of crew, passengers, or airport personnel. Still, this is a costly blunder that may keep both aircraft out of service for several days.  A new storm hitting the East Coast on Monday: I’m sure that is not comforting to hundreds of now-stranded passengers.

Saw the Kuwait Airways plane parked at JFK at around 7pm. Was on a Asiana flight that got diverted to Chicago. When we landed at JFK at 5pm it took 3 hours to taxi and finally get off the plane. And

By the way Asiana did awesome job looking after all the passengers in Chicago … everything was well organized for the layover (hotel, food, friendly team). Even had Asiana staff at hotel helping out passengers needing to go to drug store by driving them in their personal cars. And if you needed your luggage that was on the plane (you needed clothes) just tell them and they would deliver the luggage to you hotel room.

Here’s another collision (in Toronto). The video shows a small fire. The pilot declares Mayday towards the end of the video.
