I’m “live-blogging” my spontaneous road trip to Las Vegas.
I recovered from the fall and we continued our journey toward Las Vegas. But suddenly fatigue caught on again. It was time for a pick-me-up pit stop in Primm.
Primm Pit Stop
The nice thing about the Tesla is that you can turn on the auto-pilot and it will do most of the driving for you. The downside is that even in self-driving mode, you are still required to apply gentle pressure to the steering wheel to keep the autopilot engaged.
That means you cannot really sleep while you are driving. And if there was a time I wanted sleep, it was now. It had been a long day. Recall, I had no plans to go to Las Vegas.
But here was I was an hour away and I was about ready to pull over and sleep till morning, despite a bed waiting for me in Las Vegas. Leaving at 10:00 pm was not smart.
I did have a cup of coffee before I left LA, but that was not working. It was 101ºF outside, despite being 2:00 am, but there was also drops of rain coming down. I had the music on, but that did not work either.
As we approached Primm, just over Nevada border, I pulled over to a truck stop. I needed something. I don’t do energy drinks and certainly did not need any gas station coffee, but Augustine and I went inside and we each chose some candy. I needed to stay awake. Augustine was just along for the ride, but would never turn down a chance to have some candy.
We went inside and made our selections. For a moment I did consider a prison-style burrito, but wisely skipped it in favor of sour gummy Skittles (a disgusting 700 calories in the bag, but I was desperate at this point). Augustine chose Sour Patch Kids.
As we paid, the clerk asked if we wanted a bag, holding up those plastic single-use grocery bags that have been banned for years in California. There was also a guy playing a slot machine and smoking a cigarette indoors. We were not in the Golden State any longer…
Off we go. 45-minutes to Sin City.
I used to love Jean and Primm, but it sounds like they’ve sort of deteriorated over the past few years.
The casino in Primm is closed and will not reopen. Chevron across the freeway has great candy. Also Eddie World in Yermo has lots of road junk food and the greatest collection of stuffed animals anywhere. Barstow del taco is owned by the original owners and has the best tacos.
Good to know on Del Taco. I was saddened when the last original Green Burritos (not connected with Carl’s Jr) closed in LA.
I did stop in Primm (post coming tomorrow) and it looked like the casino was open.
Sad what Primm has become, years ago it was a popular stop on the way to Vegas and attracted CA citizens with their first gambling opportunity outside the state. Indian casinos ruined that and Primm is a shell of what it once was and I expect it to be down to little more than a couple gas stops in the next few years. The outlets that were once an attraction are mostly gone as well.
Jean doesn’t even have a casino anymore but has a huge gas station that has a few interesting things for Augustine to see on the way back. Nothing crazy but a clean place to fill up and snack up for the long drive back. Oh wait, you don’t have to “fill up”, my bad, lol.
Look forward to the Vegas part of the trip.
Anything loaded with sugar or processed carbs or just carbohydrates will cause an insulin spike in your body. And making you feel more tired in the long run and promoting ‘insulin resistance’ and later on in life, possibly diabetes. Maybe a handful of (unsweetened) nuts might give you better nutrition, with protein and fat, which will be better for a longer time. The coffee is good though. I know, what are you going to eat? …with kids around. Enjoy..
(….. and the sugar is just as bad as the cigarette).
Sir, this is an Arby’s
The outlet mall in Primm is downright scary now, unless you need fuel it’s advisable to avoid Primm completely. Once the roller coaster shut down it was clear Primm was no more
