My birthday occurred during our week on Gran Canaria in Spain and we celebrated with a very delicious dinner of goat and other delicacies at at a cool restaurant near our Airbnb.
La Ganania – Highly Recommended Restaurant On Gran Canaria
We kept passing this place as we were driving around the island and I finally decided to stop since there was a wi-fi sign outside. Perhaps we could get some coffee there? We also noticed there was a cactus garden and goats wandering around. Something for the kids too…
Restaurante La Ganania
Calle el Albercón, 4
35479 La Aldea de San Nicolás
Las Palmas, Spain
The coffee was fine (not as good as in the heart of Las Palmas) but the cappuccino was quite fancy with whipped cream. As we were enjoying that and my kids were running around with the goats amongst the cactus, my wife’s family was texting and when they found out where we were, decided to join us.
We moved to a table inside, ordered appetizers, and eventually ordered dinner.
From our table, we could watch our “dinner” wandering around outside, at times eating paper and whatever else he could find…
I don’t think the plan was to spend four hours here, but we did…and had a great time. The gregarious owner was puffing on a cigarette behind the counter (against the law in Span, I believe, not that I cared…) and spoke excellent German. He told us to sit back and relax and offered us menus.
Over the next several hours we enjoyed fresh-squeezed juices (a speciality of the house and certainly a healthier alternative to the huge sangrias that were also on offer) and all sorts of dishes, like an omelet, hamburger, olive tapas, fried peppers, a fresh fruit salad, calamari, and several portions of goat.
Goat is a delicacy that, in my mind, is like a hybrid between beef and lamb. It has a slight gamey flavor and also reminds me of venison. It is a bit stronger than beef but milder than lamb. The goat was stewed and served with onions and potatoes…a very delicious dish and the highlight of my birthday meal.
The owner turned up the music after dinner and watching my family on the dance floor, especially Augustine with his grandmother, was a sight to behold. Sorry, no pictures!
CONCLUSION
I enjoyed my birthday dinner at Restaurante La Ganania. If I returned to Gran Canaria, I would certainly return here and can vouch for everything on the menu…we enjoyed it all.
This is part of my summer in Germany trip report. I spent the final of the week on the island of Gran Canaria on the Spanish Canary Islands.
At least your kids had a chance to play with the goats before you ate them. Reminds me of picking a lobster from the tank for your meal.
Curious how much the meal cost?
The total bill was under 300EUR and that included a lot of alcohol.
Of course it would be double that now with BIDEN-flation.
i want to like goat but every time I try it, it tastes like a barn smells. Otherwise, that is my kind of lunch.
Appreciate you sharing your compassionate food choices, Matthew.
That looks like a great meal
