Photo Essay: Gran Canaria

Matthew Klint Posted onJune 27, 2022June 27, 2022 6 Comments

As I close out my report on my week on Gran Canaria in Spain, I know many of you prefer pictures over words, so I do want to offer a photo essay of my week there.

Gran Canaria Photo Essay

I described my week earlier and also dedicated special posts to the my Airbnb experience, Hertz rental car experience, coffee, and the aquarium. Bottom line: there’s much to do and see on this island, the weather is pleasant, but do expect a lot of sun.

First four pictures – our Airbnb house

There are a few popular beaches on the island

Driving is beautiful, but tricky on Gran Canaria
Warm summer days give way to pleasant evenings

Ferries to Tenerife are available daily

I don’t understand the appeal of rock beaches

The weather was cooler and cloudy in Arucas, making it my favorite spot on the island

The most beautiful part of the island, near Agaete

These cost 4x as much in LA!
Gas was cheaper than in Germany, which I found surprising for such a (relatively) remote island…
The stars in the dark night sky #no_filter – wish I had a longer exposure, though

Stay tuned for one final post on my time in Gran Canaria followed by our trip home.

This is part of my summer in Germany trip report. I spent the final of the week on the island of Gran Canaria on the Spanish Canary Islands.

Foreign trips should have obligatory photo of an abortion clinic NOT surrounded by white Republican male terrorists harassing people, firebombing the site and being helped by fake christian mobster monkeys.

So much more civilized outside the US.

Beautiful but not the type of beaches my family enjoys. Too many rocks.

Re rock beaches: rocks don’t stick to your skin or the space between your toes. 😉

Gran Canaria may have a different VAT and tax (on oil) system than metropolitan Spain.
But I would not know how.

It is the same in Corsica, Martinique, Guadeloupe or La Réunion in France. It is not less expensive but different and derogatory but authorised by European directives.

I had to laugh at the Burger King photo.

I finally realized how prevalent American fast food restaurants were in Europe during recent driving tours. They were at most Autobahn exits and any medium sized or larger railroad station in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Europe, save yourself and your culture, don’t eat that whopper!! Stick to the pig knuckles and sauerkraut.

While not surprising, it is sad to see the growing list of carriers retiring this superjumbo jet. On Malaysia Airlines, I flew the #A380 once from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to London (LHR) and had the entire first class cabin to myself (full review on the blog). It was a beautiful flight that I will always remember.
