New Rimowa “Chaos” Bags Are Dreadful!

Matthew Klint Posted onMay 26, 2021November 14, 2023 17 Comments

Ok, I’m not nearly hip and trendy enough to have even heard of “Chaos” before today, but I can say that I’m shaking my head at a new series of “limited edition” Rimowa cabin bags that personify the word ugly.

Rimowa “Chaos” Bags Are…Unique

I’m a huge Rimowa fan and swear by my Salsa Deluxe carry-on bag, which has served me well for nearly a decade. I suspect it will last me the rest of my life and despite little issues with the zipper (caused by airline damage when I’ve had to gate check it), I am a very satisfied customer.

In 2018, Alexandre Arnault took over as CEO of Rimowa, a German luggage company founded in 1898. Depending upon your perspective, the son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault brought fresh (or revolting) new ideas to the popular brand. That included new partnerships with Supreme and Virgil Abloh’s Off-White.

Earlier this year, Arnault left his post at Rimowa to become an executive at Tiffany & Co, which LVMH also acquired. Rimowa is now headed by Hugues Bonnet-Masimbert, a former Executive Vice President of Sales at Rimowa. Thus far, the new CEO is following the vision of Arnault in moving Rimowa beyond its traditional roots.

Today, Rimowa unveiled a new limited-edition carryon bag in partnership with London based luxury accessory brand Chaos. The new bags are, how do I put it delicately…artsy. Think spilled paint and graffiti.

And pricing?

  • Cabin Case Carry-On – $950
  • Luggage Harness – $490
  • Italian-Made Luggage Tags – $115
  • RIMOWA x Chaos Luggage Charms – $190
  • Limited Edition Case Stickers – $10

I think I’ll pass…

CONCLUSION

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose, but what incredibly ugly luggage. I guess I’m just not one of the cool kids, but I would never be seen carrying one of these…would you?

How low do you think the prices will be once this goes on sale?

For German-made tough, lightweight spinners, I always thought Rimowa was overrated. Titan is much better and usually cheaper, if you can find it.

LVMH and co. have been molesting the Rimowa brand for years. Their warranty and repair service is piss poor now and their build quality has been on the decline for some time too. It’s still wildly popular as a status symbol in Asia but mostly with clueless people with more money than sense.

It is so pretentious. Why don’t you just buy your own and use it and make it look like chaos with you ‘actual’ chaotic travel schedule. For example walk around Bogota for 15 minutes and have a street ‘artist’ authenticate your Rimowa. Now that is cool.

I use both the large and the cabin size and happily place random stickers all over them. I still have a Pete for President sticker on one which I decided to leave on. Given he is now Sec. of Transportation it seems rather fitting.

But these, nah, yet buyers into more cutting edge urban looks and who also shop the new Gucci designed Allesandro Michelle collections will love these. It’s a thing.

LVMH has put its grubby fingers on a number of classic brands ( I define classic as a blend of understated style, timeless design, high quality manufacture, great durability and longevity). Now this vulgar little upstart has had his sights set on ‘modernising’ various brands in the portfolio.
I’m not a big fan of Rimowa, a brand long since favoured by new money types: you can see them in airports with their matching sets. At least this new luggage design won’t clash with their tasteless trashy , albeit expensive wardrobes ( not all Rimowa owners, but it’s a recurring theme…)
Give me Travelpro or Delsey , for 75% less, any day…

Zéro chance of accidentally mistaking it for another person’s suitcase.

    Matt,

The word you’re looking for isn’t ugly, its FUGLY.

Hell no! Sorry for being crass but no, just no. Simply awful.

They look like what a mom trying to be grunge would pack for a getaway to Indianapolis. She has one Def Leopard shirt from a thrift store in it and doesn’t even realize they misspelled the band name.

Yuck. Just proves that most things owned by LVMH end up being crass, tasteless nonsense.

LVMH knows what it’s doing and yes, there is a market for ugly things that scream “I might not have any taste, but at least I have lots of money!”

lol… totally agree. It’s actually sad.

“How else to expalin the ugly new line of Bimmers?”
OMG… they did it again. They used to make such beautiful cars. Very sad.
At a minimum, they should run their designs by BMW auto clubs. SMH.

Just a few years ago, the Classic Rimowa Carry On Bag was about 500 EUR. They raised prices to 900 Eur

Six or 7 years ago, I bought a set of Rimowa, because of their light weight and reputation. After two flights, the suitcases had cracks in them. Much to my suprise, Rimowa does not warranty their material against cracking. I replaced them with Tumi and have been far happier.
