Smörgåsbord Breakfast In SAS Business Class

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 29, 2024January 28, 2024 4 Comments

One of the treats of flying on a longhaul SAS flight in business class is the Smörgåsbord breakfast prior to arrival.

SAS Business Class: A Bountiful Smörgåsbord Breakfast

Smörgåsbord: a buffet-style meal of Swedish origin.

I have found that the food in SAS business class is among the best in the airline industry. A special treat, however, is the pre-arrival breakfast on eastbound flights from the USA or flights between East Asia and Scandinavia. I experienced such a breakfast on my flight from Bangkok to Copenhagen.

Two hours prior to arrival breakfast service commenced. It began with a hot towel and service was offered Smörgåsbord-style from carts. Selections included a mix of hot and cold items elaborately placed on large serving trays according to the wish of each passenger. This style of service hearkens back to the “good old days” of elaborate meal service on carts (though there was no chateaubriand or lobster…)

I tried:

  • Overnight oats with mango and papaya
  • A hot croissant with Morten Heiberg marmalade
  • Charcuterie and cheeses with mixed fresh vegetables
  • Onion & cheese ege frittata with ratatouille and grilled bacon
  • Freshly squeezed Tangerine juice
  • Coffee

It was not just copious amounts of food…but delicious food as well. Even the bacon (which is rare on a plane precisely because it is so difficult to pull off so well on an airplane). And don’t forget the coffee, which SAS also does well: both espresso-based drinks and filter coffee.

a croissant on a plate

a bowl of oatmeal with fruit

a group of glasses of liquid and a bowl of food

a glass and a container on a table

a cup of milk with a brown circle in it

a cup of coffee on a table

Bottom line: don’t sleep through the breakfast on SAS!

Have really found lately that certain airlines are trying to make up from previous lows coming out of the pandemic. Hopefully KL will follow SK’s lead in improving food quality or just try to reach half the level of their sister airline, AF.

I was hoping it included Aebleflæs, Stegt flæsk med persillesovs og kartoffler and Rugbrød.
