My Shelter-In-Place Diet Is Worse Than My Travel Diet…

a group of tacos on a wood surface

Usually I eat healthy at home and splurge when I travel, especially onboard an airplane. Lately, I’ve fallen into the junk food trap at home. How about you?

My wife is a wonderful cook and very good at making healthy food taste great. But as we try to share household duties during our time of social-distancing, I’m finding it is so easy to slack…and I’m doing it. Add to that the fact that all gyms are closed and I’m really setting myself up for physical regress.

My office has a gym…it makes it so easy to workout each day. Then I can follow that with a healthy lunch of lean chicken breast and yogurt and I’m already well on my way toward my daily protein intake goal. But now the gym is closed and I’m not ordering lunch out any longer.

When I’m home, I tend to eat tacos. Taco after taco. I suppose there are worse things to eat, but with a generous helping of cheese that’s a lot of carbs and fat. And candy. If there is no candy in the house, I don’t eat it. But if I am doing grocery shopping some sour candy inevitably winds up in my shopping cart.

So let’s sum it up: less exercise, unhealthier eating…it makes me want to get back on the road!

In all seriousness, I made the decision yesterday to stop. There is no more candy or chips in my house. There’s no reason I cannot cook lean protein at home. The park is still open and I have started running a couple miles each day. It would certainly be a shame if I let my body further deteriorate during this time.

How about you, fellow traveler? Do you tend to eat better on the road or at home? Now that you are facing shelter-in-place, are you using the time to progress or regress?

Self-discipline: easier when you aren’t self-isolating…

My meals are pretty similar other than the quick Frozen pizza that I would never otherwise eat. However, I do find myself snacking more. I am fortunate to live on the water so have been getting in a 5-7 mile paddle every day to keep myself moving and not falling into a rut. I hate flat water paddling but it’s at least something that is about as distancing from others as you can get and decent exercise. I miss lifting weights though.

Was thinking that Pelaton must be doing well these days!

Totally the opposite here. I eat very healthy at home. My wife is all about healthy foods, organic, low calories, no carbs, no junk food. I am also addicted to my grill so I grill all the time on my deck. From beef to chicken to fish to vegetables I am always cooking something outside. Now, when I travel I usually lose track of time and end up eating whatever is available. I eat all junk from the basket on Delta’s first class, airplane food is not heathy at all, lounge food, restaurants. Also, when at home I go to the gym at least 4 times a week and I have access to a trainer. Now that the gym is closed I have my own weights and I follow online classes from my gym so I am not letting this quarantine change my usual habits.

I’d say I’m usually with you…as long as my wife is cooking. Now I need to learn how to do it myself! 😉

Grocery stores in LA have also been out of most fish, chicken, and beef…

Buy yourself a grill. No science at all. You can do whatever you want there and no mess of smell on the kitchen. I was lucky I have stocked up my house with enough food but t be honest so far things are pretty much normal here in MN. You may have to drive a bit for toilet paper but food is available everywhere.

I’m eating sh!t, sh!t & more sh!t. That doesn’t even include my current alcohol intake which is just plain crazy.

In the absence of workouts, it’s going to carbs that send you on the path to porkerdom. And they kick in really fast. I recommend cucumbers for snacking, very tasty, low calories, low carbs. Try some on crispbread ( also, moderate carbs) with hummus.

Now is a good time to start working out at home, and learning to cook some new healthy dishes.

I generally follow a healthy breakfast and lunch, then I give myself a little breathing room with dinner. Willpower seems to decline as the day goes on, so why make unhealthy choices FIRST and promise your future self that dinner will be healthy? It’s actually easier for me to do this on the road because I go to the store and buy exactly the same thing every time. Routine is calming for me during travel.

I’m 35 and burn a lot of calories with exercising 6 days a week, but I can already tell I’m going to have to pump the brakes a bit and maybe only plan for 3-4 “whatever goes” dinners every week.

I’d be happy to ship you a serving of the enchiladas I made last night, but they probably wouldn’t look too appetizing by the time they got to you.

Not much change to our routine, honestly. We’ve always preferred to cook our meals at home; we took our son out to eat for lunch on Saturday but that was really our only restaurant meal each week. Our food flunks just about every test of “healthy” there is, but it’s fresh. The biggest issue has been finding ingredients because of the hoarders still clearing out the shelves. It’s been taking 3-4 trips to different stores to get what I need rather than one.

Running has seriously been keeping me sane these last couple weeks. Feels like half the nation has at least considered it after the gyms closed LOL

It’s a really good way to burn off calories and see something outdoors. And to justify the junk food as a younger lad

After reading this I had to make some tacos. It was the last of my ground sirloin, so I guess I need to venture out and try to find some (not easy lately). I guess I could do fish tacos (maybe(.

It’s easy to find junk. Not so much with fresh proteins, Not even any canned vegetables.

Unfortunately frozen pizzas have been a staple lately. Lat night I did have some really good fresh Salmon done in the hot air fryer.

I find it easier to eat healthy than not. With a little junk thrown in. It’s what you take home to eat that makes the difference. 90% good and 10% crap I find a good balance. Life ain’t no fun without some decadence but then get out and walk.
