Southwest Airlines has unveiled another patriotic special livery, this time timed to America’s 250th birthday.
Southwest Unveils “Independence One” Boeing 737 For America250 Celebration
Southwest Airlines announced a partnership with America250 and introduced “Independence One,” a specially painted Boeing 737 that will join the carrier’s growing fleet of patriotic-themed aircraft. The plane officially enters service on April 29, with its first scheduled flight from Dallas (DAL) to Philadelphia (PHL).
The new aircraft joins “Freedom One,” introduced in 2021, and “Liberty One,” another newly unveiled patriotic aircraft. Southwest says the program celebrates both the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026 and the airline’s own 55-year history of connecting communities across the United States.
What Independence One Looks Like
Southwest says the aircraft features several design elements tied to the founding of the United States, including:
- A red, white, and blue paint scheme
- “1776” written in large quill-style script
- The phrase “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”
- Thirteen stars representing the original colonies
- Betsy Ross-style star circles on the engine cowlings
- A special “1776” tail number
- America250 decals on the nose and winglets

It is certainly not subtle….
Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said:
“With our new Independence One and Liberty One aircraft, we honor this important milestone in our nation’s history, and the generations of Customers that Southwest has carried. They join our Freedom One aircraft in uniting families, bringing service members home, flying entrepreneurs chasing an opportunity, and helping communities stay connected. Southwest is proud to be a part of the 250th national celebration and to honor the same spirit of innovation, resilience, and optimism that has shaped our country and our Company.”
Are you feeling optimistic these days?
Southwest also says it will serve as the official airline of America Gives, a volunteerism initiative tied to the broader America250 campaign. The carrier says it will invest up to $250,000 in grants supporting nonprofits served by Southwest employees.
My Take
Special liveries can be cheesy, overdone, or forgettable (I’m not a fan of most centennial liveries, thus far). But Southwest has usually done these well, and this one fits the brand.
Southwest remains one of the most domestically focused airlines in the country, so tying itself to a nationwide anniversary celebration makes sense. Philadelphia, home of Independence Hall, as the inaugural destination is also a nice touch. And in an era when many airline paint jobs have become bland, I don’t mind this one.
I do have a suggestion (below) if Southwest happens to want to buy JetBlue, though. 😉

CONCLUSION
Southwest’s new “Independence One” Boeing 737 is a patriotic flying billboard timed to America’s 250th birthday, but is also branding to be expected form the airlines where all the pilots wear American flag neckties.
The aircraft should generate attention throughout 2026, especially alongside Freedom One and Liberty One.
Love it or hate it, you will notice it.

Kinda funny coming from you who when Israel was ravaging Gaza you where totally ok with that.
You are more Isrealies then a USA citizen
One trick pony without the courage to even use a real name but post hundreds of times from the same IP address.
Happy Birthday America.
Yippee ki yo ki yay! Happy Birthday America Dallas style. Cute, but I think your jet blue version might be more accurate.
I think it’s cool. Even if we’re not all pleased with how things are going lately, there’s still reason for pride in the ideals of the nation and its founding, nearly 250 years ago. We’re still a ‘work in progress.’
The 0.2-year-old WN B737 MAX 8 looks quite impressive.
Let’s recall that in the world of commercial aviation, the birth of WN is considered a true example of the “American Dream” rising from nothing to the top.
In the meantime, Boeing and Copa Airlines announced order for up to 60 B737 MAX jetliners. → https://investors.boeing.com/investors/news/press-release-details/2026/Boeing-and-Copa-Airlines-Announce-Order-for-up-to-60-737-MAX-Jets/default.aspx
Still waiting on an “Oklahoma One.” Southwest seems to be giving LUV to every other state they serve with a theme plane EXCEPT the second one they served outside of TX.
Like most Americans, I think they just forgot that Oklahoma exists.
