Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau has weighed in on the Sunwings party flight from Montreal to Cancun in which maskless “media influences” vaped and drank onboard, calling them “idiots” as Canadian airlines moved swiftly to ban those passengers on their own flights.
Canadian Prime Minster Forcefully Condemns Sunwings Party Flight To Cancun
A group of young people who call themselves the “111 Private Club” chartered a flight on Canadian budget carrier Sunwings Airlines from Montreal to Cancun on December 30, 2021. Onboard, the party began, with passengers removing their masks, emptying their seats into the aisles, vaping, and drinking alcohol from large bottles.
The viral videos have sparked outrage across Canada and led Sunwings as well as Air Canada and Air Transit to ban the passengers from returning to Canada on their flight. According to 19-year-old Rebecca St. Pierre, a passenger onboard, she’s now stranded in Mexico after testing positive onboard along with 30 other passengers from the flight.
An investigation by Transport Canada is underway and the passengers could receive fines or even jail time upon their return to Canada.
Appearing at a press conference on Wednesday, Trudeau was asked about the incident. Calling them “idiots” he added:
“There will be a full investigation into exactly what went on in this situation. I think like all Canadians who have seen those videos, I’m extremely frustrated.”
“We know how hard people have worked to keep themselves safe, to limit their family gatherings at Christmas time, to wear masks, to get vaccinated, to do all the right things, and it’s slap in the face to see people putting themselves, putting their fellow citizens, putting airline workers at risk by being completely irresponsible.”
James William Awad, the event organizer, has thus far avoided an apology for what occurred onboard, calling it a “simple” party and promising to investigate:
I take this matter very seriously. A simple party on a plane did all this buzz. I will take a moment to sit down and re think everything. Especially how I can do things better next time. Give me a moment to understand the situation better.
