Free Wi-Fi In SWISS Economy Class?!

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 22, 2023November 13, 2023 3 Comments

Is SWISS, the airline that has been notoriously stingy when it comes to in-flight wi-fi, turning a corner and moving toward free internet? If my flight from Zurich to Warsaw is any indication, the answer just might be yes.

Free Wi-Fi On SWISS…Even In Economy Class

I’ve rued the high prices and data caps on SWISS wi-fi for years. When I flew from Zurich to Los Angeles last year, the cost of wi-fi was staggering:

  • 20MB – 9CHF
  • 50MB – 19CHF
  • 120MB – 39CHF
  • 220MB – 59CHF

But I had a very different experience on my ZRH – WAW flight.

I almost did not connect at all, assuming that the price would be too high. But feating a long train or bus ride ahead to Ukraine without any sort of internet access, I decided to check how much a connection would cost.

I nearly fell off my chair when I clicked on the connection page and saw the wi-fi was FREE!

I clicked on “Go online” and was instantly connected. Not even an ad!

And the internet was fast:

I was very impressed and hope this represents the future of wi-fi on SWISS. This would be the sort of change that would drive more of my business to SWISS.

It isn’t clear if this complimentary pricing represents a test as SWISS rolls out wi-fi on its short-haul fleet or represents a (very marked) policy change.

In any case, I greatly enjoyed the wi-fi on my flight to Warsaw. Thank you SWISS!

I can tolerate it for a one-hour flight.

If one has *G status, they get all the benefits of business class with an economy ticket, the only exception being catering. Not sure what the food is like on Swiss European C nowadays, but on Lufthansa the lack of food in economy easily beats the mystery sandwich and whole apple (no way to peel it available, nor any cinnamon powder for seasoning) which one may feel compelled to try as they have been paid for.
