Tasty Snack on Thai Airways

Matthew Klint Posted onJune 15, 2017November 14, 2023 4 Comments

There are certain things I love about Thai Airways…the first class ground experience being the highlight. Then’s there the onboard food…usually quite forgettable. For this week’s Meal of the Week, I give Thai credit where credit is due.

Let me give you some context. I’ve flown about a dozen times on Thai and had only one truly good meal, a herb-encrusted steak on the A380 in First Class from Osaka to Bangkok. That was delicious:

a plate of food on a table

a plate of food with broccoli and potatoes

My most recent flight in business class, late last year from Tokyo Haneda to Bangkok, included a shrimp, noodle and sushi dinner after takeoff. There was no choice.

a tray with food on it

a plate of sushi on a table

a bowl of noodles with shrimp and cheese

For someone who has tried to acquire a taste for sushi over the years but still finds all forms of it unpalatable, it meant no dinner. My stomach was growling by the time breakfast service began…

How about shorthaul dining? On a 1.5hr Bangkok to Rangoon flight I received the following meal:

a tray with food on it

a plate of food on a table

I’m sure some of you will be able to tell me exactly what it is, but I found the fatty/fried texture quite unremarkable. And that gray sweet stuff on the side…

Again there was no choice.

So when I flew from Vientiane, Laos to Bangkok last month in economy class, I was not expecting much. I knew meal service would be included, but I figured I’d just wait for the Oman Air lounge.

Turns out the snack was pretty tasty. Why? It was processed western-food: a hot pocket and blueberry muffin.

It wasn’t even as “beautiful” as the picture on the box:

a pastry in a box

While I ordinarily would never eat this home, I enjoyed this little junk food snack. It was just comfort food: a sign of how unrefined my tastes actually are! 🙂

On another note, I love empty wide bodies on short flights.

CONCLUSION

I am amazed sometimes that I care so much about airline food…that I even write a weekly feature about airline meals. But I enjoyed this unhealthy, processed snack very much. Thanks Thai Airways.
