TSA Waives Liquid Ban…For Hand Sanitizers

a bottle of hand sanitizer

You can now take bottles of hand sanitizer as large as 12 ounces when going through a U.S. airport security checkpoint.

TSA loosened the rule in light of anxiousness over COVID-19. Here’s the full statement from the TSA:

TSA understands that COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is at the forefront on the minds of travelers, as health officials are encouraging that individuals wash their hands frequently. With that in mind, TSA is allowing passengers to bring liquid hand sanitizer containers up to 12 ounces to be permitted in carry-on bags until further notice. Passengers can expect that these containers larger than the standard allowance of 3.4 ounces of liquids permitted through a checkpoint will need to be screened separately, which will add some time to their checkpoint screening experience.

Please keep in mind that all other liquids, gels and aerosols brought to a checkpoint continue to be allowed at the limit of 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters carried in a one quart-size bag.

Do note that the liquid ban still applies to other items over 3.4 ounces (100mL).

CONCLSUION

There’s some irony in this announcement, though the liquid ban has always been ironic security theatre. Hopefully letting hand sanitizer through will just be the first step. How about water next? People need to stay hydrated to stay well…

What magically happened to make this safe at 12 ounces all of a sudden? Like you said it’s all theater.

And they still make me pay over $4 for a 16oz bottle of water after TSA. As for the had sanitizer, good luck finding any. There are morons in this country that tried to take advantage of the situation so there is no left.

Let’s increase the volume of flammable gels that people can take on the plane! Doesn’t sound dangerous at all.
