First Look at the United 747 Shindig at SFO

Matthew Klint Posted onNovember 7, 2017November 14, 2023 1 Comment

In just a couple hours, festivities will begin to commemorate United’s final 747 flight.

Last night I arrived late into San Francisco and happened to pull up right at Gate 90, just a couple gates away from 86 where the festivities will take place tomorrow.

Everything was already set up!

a room with a large banner and a couch

a sign with a picture of a woman in a tunnel

a wall with a picture of an airplane and a poster on it

a room with a large blue banner and chairs

a stage with a sign and a plane on it

a white box with blue and white text

a white sign with orange text

a row of barriers in an airport

a line of luggage bags in a building

There will be speeches, there will be gift bags, and there will photo-ops (with props).

I took a look at my program last night and grimaced as I realized I forgotten to bring a 1970’s themed costume along. While I don’t own any 1970s-era suits and did not have time to go scrounging around a Goodwill or my father’s closet, I could have least put on one of those ridiculously wide 1970’s neckties. Oh well…

My secret hope is that we will get something like the passengers on the final international 747 flight from Seoul to San Francisco received: framed plaques honoring the occasion.

Todays’ festivities start at 11am ET / 8am PT. As long as I don’t fall prey to further sickness, I’ll be live tweeting better than I did on the Singapore trip!

Coming up I will share more thoughts on the Boeing 747 as it relates to me and my own travel history.

I wish UA would pay homage to the PanAm heritage as part of the 747 celebration. PA was the 747 launch customer and I first flew the PA 747 many times. UA took over PA’s Asia network as well as the LHR routes. And through the Star Alliance and LH JV UA inherited PA’s strong position in FRA
