United Airlines Teases New 2023 International Routes

United Airlines will announce its new transatlantic routes for 2023 tomorrow and has once again teased us with a fun new video.

United Airlines Will Announce New 2023 Transatlantic Routes Tomorrow

Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, has been ambitious in adding intercontinental routes over his tenure and next year promises to include forays into new markets and possibly return to old ones.

United has previously announced new service from Newark to Dubai as well as the resumption of service from Newark to Stockholm, which it has not operated since 2019. That Stockholm flight was set to resume last year, but was canceled due to an aircraft shortage triggered by the grounding of 777-200 aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines.

United also announced in July that it will expand its capital-to-capital service with new Washington-to-Berlin service next summer. That flight was also supposed to launch this year but was canceled before it started due to weak demand.

For what’s it worth, a reader earlier today on Live and Let’s Fly left the following comment:

I have some very good friends in Network Planning, some of the new routes planned tomorrow are adding ORD-BCN, DEN-FCO, a flight to Malaga, a new route to Pisa, expansion into LHR frequency, among others including their new DXB route already announced, etc.

The new video includes many clues that would validate those predictions, particularly Quayle circling Malaga on a map of Spain with a New York (646) area code above it.

I’d say the bear (the symbol of Berlin) and cherry blossom (a symbol of Washington, DC in the spring) signify the IAD-BER service we are already aware of.

Finally, I predicted this morning:

Based on the teaser video from United I’m also predicting LAX-LHR goes double daily.

The news will drop tomorrow morning. We’ll see if these guesses are correct and if there are any surprises.

What are your predictions for the new 202 United transatlantic routes?

You left off SFO off here! G5 is SFO international terminal! The lily golden name too is interesting

Wow! I was not expecting DEN-FCO, that is very exciting!

Also LAX-LHR going double daily is great news, Quayle seems committed to the LAX hub which is great to see. Especially only a week or so after Delta announced LHR service from LAX, wouldn’t be surprised if Delta backtracks on that now.

Paris is also in the video, I’m curios where the additional Paris flight would be from? LAX/DEN/IAH, or just increased frequency from IAD or SFO?

ORD-BCN is a definite,… AeroInfoBCN news spilled the beans early. Too bad I can’t post a screenshot of it.

SFO-MNL or SFO-BKK is also a big possibility.

Gonna be an awfully long haul since it says these are Atlantic flights.

    I’m betting on EWR-AGP, EWR-BUD (twin girls implying Buda-Pest) ORD-BCN,ORD-ARN, DEN-CDG, DEN-DUB, EWR-MAN (that’s Manchester Town Hall clock tower not Big Ben)

I’d be happy with a reasonably decent new J meal to anywhere.

I can confirm that EWR-PRG (Czech) and EWR-ARN (Sweden) IAD-BER (Germany) are also being added as well to the 2023 schedule although these routes are not a huge surprise. An additional CDG route from another hub (I think he said IAH if i remember correctly). LAX-LHR is getting more frequency as well Matt. The number 23 also means something as well. 😉

By 23, isn’t that the new number of flights UA will have to LHR? Wonder what that means?

What’s getting the axe to enable the new routes? I’m no fan of this game the airlines play where new routes are announced without any mention of what routes are losing service to enable this. It’s like offering to sell you a lovely meal without you knowing what the price will be.

Why would anything need to be axed? The 777s have returned to service which gives them a nice boost in widebody capacity.

Yeah I don’t think anything is getting axed. United has enough wide bodies. Keep in mind last June they had 52 777s grounded, and they only had to suspend a handful of routes due to aircraft shortage. United didn’t retire any wide bodies during the pandemic, and has taken on another 20 or so 787s, with 11 more due in the next year, so they are just fine in terms of plane.

I was looking at the schedule today though, and of all the routes they launched last year, it looks like Bergen will not be returning. That is the only one I can find though.

I sincerely hope you’re right and my concern is misplaced.

At 0:19 notice how tightly packed together those poor souls are. That looks like an awful way to spend 8 hours, especially if you don’t know the person next to you.
