Woman Treats United Airlines 757-200 Business Class Cabin As Her Personal Gym

a woman sitting in a chair with her hands together

Here’s a case of that fine line between minding your own business and being obnoxious onboard: it is okay to use your (rather tight) premium cabin seat as a personal gym to perform calisthenics and stretching during a flight? One woman pushed the boundaries on her 757-200 United Airlines flight in business class.

Fair? Woman Turns Business Class Cabin Into Gym On United Airlines 757-200 As Others Look On In Disbelief

The woman is accused of working out “the entire flight” while “flight attendants did nothing.” I don’t buy it…I doubt she was working out during takeoff, landing, and the meal service. I also doubt that even between it, she spent hours working out.

United uses its 757-200 on premium transcontinental routes as well as on select transatlantic and hub-to-hub flights. You can read my review of the business class cabin here. There’s not enough room to really move around the cabin and exercise and window seats do not have direct aisle access. While stretching is one thing, any more intense exercise would have been very annoying to a seatmate (though of course, maybe she was traveling with her spouse).

On the one hand, I realize there’s wisdom in minding our own business. Furthermore, isn’t stretching and exercise a far better way to use your time than sitting like a zombie watching a movie?

Yes, but as I said about “GI Joe” who was working out in the American Airlines lounge, it’s simply rude to do calisthenics in the middle of an airport first class lounge (especially when you grunt while performing reps). I do admire wanting to stay healthy, but a shared space is not the place for a workout. Unlike a lounge, there is no escape on a flight. While a few minutes of stretching are one thing, if this did turn out into an extended workout, I do find it disturbing.

Live and let live…but not in shared space at 35,000 feet….

What’s wrong with her providing a free show? Everyone could whip out their cell phones and post on the internet her routine.

Don’t fly United if you are this type of person. Fly on Qantas’ A350 for Project Sunrise and do this in the wellness place.

I don’t see a problem with that if she’s staying in her space. Perhaps she was concerned about DVT, which for some can be a real problem when flying long haul.

Frenchie – you can sit next to her for 6 hours next time.

that isnt even yoga. this woman sucks. wish they would just leave the seatbelt sign on the whole time for these clowns.

If she is that worried about DVT she should probably avoid flying. Don’t you think?

I saw a guy doing push ups on my United flight the other day. He must have asked the flight attendants if he could and they must have allowed it. Either that or they didn’t want to tell him no. He was in the galley doing reps for like 10 minutes

I get it, after flying for 10 hours followed by another 11 hours, I stop caring what people think as much. If I need to pace the aisle, do lunges by the galley, so be it

A shared space in a metal tube at 35,000 feet. Quite a difference, wouldn’t you say?

While a side from her particular routine it does remind me of the old joke, “How do you know someone does Crossfit?” “Don’t worry, they will tell you.”

Maybe some ‘karmic’ CAT ( clear air turbulence ) will blow her way … Mind you not too turbulent/injurious, but just enough to spoil the show !

I have no problem with this. She stayed in her place; didn’t block the aisle and I didn’t see her disturbing other passengers. Some people just like to complain.

I have a chronic back pain and have done stretches for my back in long flights, too. It does help with my pain. Is this really offensive?

That’s the problem today. People don’t see anything wrong with it because they have no sense of what is appropriate and inappropriate. The world to them is a free for all. No sense of propriety. No manners.

By whose definition? Yours? On the slider between not noticeable and extremely offensive, this is much closer to the former. She’s not making noise, and she didn’t even leave her seat. Nor was it obvious that anyone was next to her.

On the other hand, it clearly doesn’t take much for you to mind other people’s business, whether or not they’re bothering you.

In psych circles, she would be called a “ten man band”. She needs meds and a shrink to contain her personality disorders. No boundaries and has no sense of proper behavior.

All the wrong people fly business or first these days..I’ve spent a great deal for a first class ticket…but get there and some rude person like this women or someone who was upgraded… because they want it filled..and they usually are Not first material..I want quiet and a nice atmosphere.

On one hand she isn’t making any noise and is staying in her space and may have an issue that requires her to avoid sitting for long periods, on the other it is not a gym and 3-5 minutes every hour or so would seem reasonable. At the end if the day though seems like this should fall under “Not bothering anyone else so free to be whoever you want to be.” applies. Manners are subjective, so if it’s just bad manners IYO probably best to just assume she has to to avoid back pain or whatever and enjoy your flight.

Big deal, she’s stretching in her own space. She’s not in the aisle, she’s not blocking anyone. People will complain about anything.

How is she even bothering anyone? I’m assuming that anyone sitting right next to her would have to be ok with it, and otherwise she’s providing entertainment (albeit not intentionally) for those that decide to watch. It doesn’t appear that she’s trying to bother anyone and yet folks that want to find something to be offended about, will. Of course I wasn’t there but from what I see – who cares.
