Breakfast Tacos On United Airlines?

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 25, 2018November 14, 2023 8 Comments

Each week, my Meal of the Week  feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.

My upgrade did not clear on a recent flight from Washington Dulles to Las Vegas but I wasn’t worried. Why? It would finally give me the chance to try United’s new breakfast tacos.

The breakfast tacos have actually been on the menu a few months, but it was my first opportunity to try them. Here’s how the menu describes them:

United Airlines Tacos

Egg and chicken chorizo tacos

Scrambled eggs, chicken chorizo, Monterey Jack cheese sauce, Swiss American cheese, charred chipotle salsa and chives in corn and flour tortillas

Two tacos per order

$8.99

I was sitting in the exit row of EconomyPlus and snagged the last tacos onboard. I figured they would taste good, but was skeptical the taco shells would be crispy.

Turns out I was right: the shells were indeed soft, bordering on soggy. But the contents inside were tasty and I very much enjoyed the tacos, polishing both off very quickly. The tortillas, by the way, were described as “corn and flour” but tasted like corn to me.

Both the meat and eggs were nicely spiced with no extra sauce necessary.

The last time I had tacos on United was in 2009 on a flight from Mexico City to Washington Dulles.

While tasty, the portion size was tiny. That’s the problem with the new breakfast tacos as well. Two is simply not enough: I could have easily eaten six.

CONCLUSION

I do recommend these tacos, even if the taco shells are not as crispy as I’d like. The chorizo / egg / cheese combo works well.

They look decent, but I wish they wouldn’t mess with the recipe to try to appeal to everyone:

    1.) Corn tortillas.
    2.) Pork chorizo.

The softer the tacos, the easier and faster United will conquer the latin market, particularly flying to Latin America. Real tacos are not crispy or hard shell. They are soft and made out of corn.

Fair point. Maybe UA even intends them that way. I just thought I read somewhere that they were intended to be crispy.

The disparity between their advertised photo and actual product is worse than McDonald’s. Wish they would stop doing that. Show me what I’m actually ordering.

You think they’d sell anything if they did that?

The sheer number of ingredients on that list is quite worrying. The food we eat is ridiculously processed…

Agree…the number of ingredients are a bit much for my liking.
