United Airlines is launching nonstop service between Denver and Rome next summer and added new service to seven other domestic or Canadian cities from its Rocky Mountain hub.
New Denver – Rome Route Plus Service To 8 Other Cities On United Airlines From DEN
United Airlines will launch daily seasonal service between Denver (DEN) and Rome (FCO) in 2025. The service:
- will operate May 1 – September 24, 2025
- utilize a Boeing 787-9 aircraft with:
- 48 seats in Polaris business class
- 21 seats in PremiumPlus premium economy
- 188 seats in economy class, including 39 Economy Plus seats with extra legroom
Tickets are on sale now and the flight will operate according to the following schedule:
- UA177 – dep Denver (DEN) 5:50 pm arr Rome (FCO) 12:20 pm+1 (10 hours, 30 minutes)
- UA178 – dep Rome (FCO) 2:20 pm arr Denver (DEN) 5:45 pm (11 hours, 25 minutes)
United also serves London, Frankfurt, and Munich from Denver while Lufthansa serves Frankfurt and Munich. Edelweiss Air serves Zurich seasonally.

United has called Denver its most profitable hub and as an ongoing airport expansion adds more gates to the mile-high airport, United will add service to more domestic destinations (and one in Canada), including:

Flights will be operated by aircraft ranging from a CRJ-200 (Regina) to an E-175 (North Bend, Peoria, Redding, Wilmington) to a 737-800 (Buffalo and Pensacola).

CONCLUSION
United Airlines is bulking up in Denver with new service to Rome and seven domestic + Canadian destinations starting next summer. The new tickets are available for purchase, including the Rome flight. I expect that flight will do very well, though it underscores the need for a Polaris Lounge in Denver, something CEO Scott Kirby teased in May 2023 but has not yet materialized.

Looks like United will be ramping up more flying to Italy especially with ITA coming soon enough to the star alliance 🙂
Denver now is just mainly missing seasonal service to Amsterdam and Paris.
We know that ITA will probably be rolled into Star A in time so more flights to Rome makes a lot of sense. Not the ideal place to connect in Europe – but could develop over time for destinations in Southern Europe and North Africa.

DEN is probably the most chaotic airport in the US. It is an absolute nightmare in every aspect. It is very far from the city and traffic to get there is horrible. Rental car location is far and buses take forever. TSA looks like a busy mall on Black Friday. Trams to terminals is a lottery since they might not work or are super crowded. And then you add weather which could completely disrupt your plans. I avoid DEN as much as I can. As for Rome flights, it seems every major US airport is adding flights to Rome which is good and bad. It is good that you have more options to get to Rome but it is bad that the city will be so overcrowded in the summer. I am taking advantage of the new non stop from MSP to Rome but I am preparing myself for chaos.
I think it’s a good airport to connect in, but yes, it is kind of remote if you are coming in from the city.
People say that but when you look at actual times it isn’t that bad. At writing, 5:00 PM Mountain Google maps says it is a 46 minute trip from DIA to downtown Denver. Compare to O’Hare, JFK, LAX I think that compares favorably. It’s a lot of enpty, barren land so people think it is bad, but it’s quite favorable compared to many airports in terms of travel time

lol, yes will be a harsh flight, 2.20 hours on the CRJ200. That said, those of us in Regina are just glad to have another US flight that is actually meaningful for connecting, its a colossal boost for the city here. @Matthew Klint, you might be interested reading into it but the government of Sask. is subsidizing the flight, as they do for Westjet to Minneapolis. My basic understanding is if UA or WS dont hit certain profit levels, the government of Sask. will step in a pay a certain amount, i think by up to CAD$2m (which is like 5 USD these days lol)

If ITA heads over to Star Alliance as part of getting closer to Lufthansa, then DEN-FCO-___ and the return opens a bunch of good one-stop possibilities for Denver.
A CRJ-100? I thought those were all long gone by now and the only thing that OO operates is CRJ-200, -550, 700, and -900. In the 50 seat category it could either be the -200 or -550, but I’d hope its the -550 which is hands down one of the best configurations if you’re stuck in a RJ

Cost per enplaned passenger at DEN is pretty reasonable compared to other UA hubs and they have just shy of 50% market share with majority (very full) domestic flights.
Nitpicking, but while some in the news might like Regina to be a domestic destination, the vast majority of people in Regina are opposed to that.
Quite fair and I’ve adjusted the story accordingly. Canada and Mexico are essentially considered domestic in terms of shorthaul versus longhaul, but it is an important distinction.
