As United Airlines rolls out new uniforms for front-line employees, it will also issue new name tags and wings. The new larger name tags will include service milestones and also the option of adding personal pronouns to identify gender.
New Name Tags At United Airlines Will Include Personal Pronoun Option
In a memo to employees written by Jessica Muench, United’s Chief Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer, and shared with Live and Let’s Fly, Muench makes the business case for helping employees be “true to themselves” through the use of personal pronouns:
Creating a place where our team members feel included and proud to work makes good business sense because our team members create that same feeling for our customers.
This week, we took another step to build upon our inclusive culture. As part of our new uniform program for flight attendants and customer service representatives, we’re producing new wings and name bars that incorporate our updated United branding along with personalized features like milestone anniversaries and the option to add pronouns.
These new features give our employees the option to celebrate their years of service with our airline while also identifying in the way that feels most true to themselves — you’ll start to see these new wings and name bars in our airports and on board our aircraft later this year.
The memo includes pictures of the new name tags and wings, which will be consolidated for flight attendants and pilots into a single uniform accoutrement.
Our goal is for every employee to feel included and empowered to make a measurable difference in our success, and we will continue to cultivate a workplace and airline where each of us and all of us feel seen.
United already allows employees to include preferred pronouns in email signatures “to create space for employees of all gender identities to be seen and referred to in the manner that is most affirming, respectful and courteous.”
The new name tags will roll out later this year. The new flight attendant badge is pictured above. Here is what the new nametags will look like for gate agents and lounge staff:

CONCLUSION
As part of its continuing DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) goals, United will add the option of including personal pronouns on employee name tags starting later this year. This will be optional and the rollout with coincide with new uniforms that will also debut in the months ahead.
Whenever I address a flight attendant, I use the pronoun “you.”
UA FA’s should also have counts of how many pax they’ve thrown off the plane on the badge, like the marks on the side of WWII fighters on how many they’ve shot down.
I love this idea of signaling how many folks an FA has kicked off of planes, but I’d prefer something like shoulder bars so that I can tell from a distance whether or not the FA really has the stones.
I can’t wait to see videos of some fool getting kicked off a flight, and I can see from the first view: “Oh no, look, that passenger is talking to an FA who has already thrown 3 people off, we know what’s coming next!”
@Jan
I see multi-colored stones on the name tag.
Each dark stone represents 10 economy PAXs ejected from the jet and a 10 position jump in the FA seniority list.
Identifying 5 fathers with their daughters as human traffickers also earns a dark stone.
Each FA with 3 dark stones is entitled to 40 position jump in the seniority list.
Won’t be any PAX left to eject when 30% of the FA have 3 dark stones.
Those FA without any dark stones in a rolling 2 year cycle are ejected from the airline.
Mr Kirby can boast how he has controlled costs and difficult PAX.
The above is to be taught in Harvard MBA classes.
you should be the next CEO
I never use pronouns when addressing people directly and in conversation directly with them. Not sure how this will change my interactions with anybody. Just as long as they are doing their jobs I’m good.
Yeah, seems more applicable to email where you’re addressing groups of people and referring to some in the third person.
One on one customer service…the whole ‘affirmation’ thing is unnecessary – who doesn’t use ‘you’ when speaking to crew
I find it hard to believe that you don’t use the words “I” and “you” when talking to a flight attendant
@ Matthew — Are they trying to piss people off?
@Gene
No, I don’t think they are trying to… But they are trying to pander to their woke staff.
Or… like… affirm people’s identities.
Their identities are tied to a pronoun? How sad.
Almost as sad as those whose identity is tied to a political party
I want my pronouns instead of my name on my boarding pass.
Your highness/His Majesty
Jan,
Your suggestion rocks!
TY, anyone who gets 5 “kills” gets the David Dao award and gets retired early as an ace FA
My preferred pronoun is Exalted One
almost as sad as those whose identity is tied to using some electronic gadget. Hey look — I’m wearing SICKpods or using my SICKphone.
By myself at a restaurant — no, I’m not, I’m talking to someone!
… and meanwhile, domestic premium cabin and Polaris cabin catering (soft product) still sucks.
Simply only virtue signaling by UA. How about something that shows you care about paying passengers?
You get MP devaluations instead.
Exactly!
Another Kirby BS. Who uses pronouns to talk to FAs or gate agents? Nobody. It is “you”. People that need to show their pronouns are weak. That’s all it shows when they need to share that.
If it makes them happy why do you care? Does this make your life worse? I know… they didn’t do this 20 years ago
Because its moronic, and the stupidity of it annoys me. Not to the point where it ruins my day, but rather makes me reflect for a moment on the absurdity of corporate America, woke cultists, and humanity in general.
Secure and successful people have no issue with things that have literally nothing to do with them. You, on the other hand, are annoyed, feel the need to make a political statement or personal observation about literally everything you don’t like, AND share it with a bunch of strangers online who don’t know you and literally DGAF.
What is TRULY absurd is the extent to which you do this on someone’s personal travel blog, as if you’re part of a community or something. This is why people laugh at you, charging “wokeness” with everything you don’t like, support, or understand. But go ahead and stomp your feet and whine to help you get through your day. It’s just so predictable, boring, and juvenile. Thanks for the laugh!
@Ken
Exactly.
I think you took longer to write that screed than I did with my one liners. So in reality, you’re likely a whiny woke wanker offended by everything.
Because UA has more important issues to address…catering to a small deranged portion of the population is low on the list of priorities.
Because it is a regression from 20 years ago. I am all in for positive changes but not for moronic ones. You embrace change no matter what, that’s what brainless people like you do. I embrace positive changes. Your pronoun is loser.
Your pronoun is dinosaur. Step aside gramps, your time is through
I think we’re getting under this wokey’s skin.
Yea I’m real bothered that a couple whiners are upset that things aren’t changing the way they want them to.
Hope to meet you one day. I will drop a quarter on your hat.
You’re too afraid to enter the city I live in so I doubt we’ll meet
As long as it’s optional and employees are not pressured to include pronouns which are unnecessary for 99.7% of the population, it’s not that bad of a policy. For the souls who are troubled and are transgendered, it really doesn’t hurt us for that option to be there or have passenger tickets having a 3rd gender option. Things like this, though, are a slippery slope. We went from civil unions to men competing with women in female high school and college sports in about 15 years. We shouldn’t normalize pronouns for the 99.7% for which it is unnecessary.
I am concerned about certain groups being denied the ability to wear pins like White Lives Matter, Straight Pride, and etc despite some airlines allowing employees to wear BLM or rainbow pins. It’s only fair if all sides can express themselves and have pride.
100% spot on John. Thank you for not being bullied by the deviants and woke and speaking the truth.
Awhile back we were told not to wear lapel pins that signified or promoted religious affiliation, ie cross or dove signifying the Holy Spirit. I am certain that has now been rescinded and titles such as pastor (if you have a degree in theology, evangelist, etc are now permitted.
Good. Now we will know immediately if we are dealing with a woke weirdo or not.
You hit the nail in the head. These idiots don’t know that this will only make smart people know they are morons. Some can hide but putting your pronouns on a name tag it shows how dumb you are.
Kind of like when someone wears a Maga hat… then you know there is a high likelihood they are on their way to shoot a bunch of kids at a mall
I’m sure that trans who killed those kids in Tennessee was a huge Trump supporter.
I see your one example and raise you the mall shooter in Texas last week that shot a 5 year olds face off, the Buffalo supermarket shooter, the 4th of July parade shooter, the Las Vegas shooter that KILLED 58 PEOPLE… need I go on?
All those proved to be leftists with socialist views. The Texas illegal immigrant said he didn’t like White People. Just because a mongrelized whatever had some tattoos does not mean anything. In fact every single school shooter in the history of the world has turned out to be a radical leftist.
People like you always fixate on these events which are terribly small in number compared to the yearly violence committed by Blacks based on crime statistics and the national crime victimization survey.
Your never-ending parade of sharing political views on a travel blog when literally ZERO of the readers here know you or care is the height of idiocy. The fact that a name tag would trigger you signals something serious unstable on your part. Nobody cares and nobody is offended by your perspective, but the compulsion to continue drooling over everything you don’t like sounds like an issue for a mental health professional.
Clearly you care and are offended because you took the time to respond nastily to all my comments. It amuses me to know I triggered you :).
Why do unstable people always call someone “triggered” when they’re being laughed at? That’s something a child would say. Patiently waiting for “I know you are, but what am I?”
People choosing to put pronouns on their name tag is proof of mental illness which all leftists suffer from.
Political issues being discussed or reported on a blog pertaining to travel is very popular with readership. We could look at the BA sites based on views and those that allow comments and discuss political issues tend to have the highest numbers.
Being anti-woke is like saying you are proud of your racism/homophobia/xenophobia/sexism/etc.
All those words were literally invented by communists to get White people and Christians to act against our self interest and normalize evil. Being anti woke is the litmus test of if someone is a human or a zombie for leftist propaganda.
Wrong. They were invented by people who are anti-hate and for diversity. Being anti-woke means you are pro-hate and against diversity. Which isn’t too shocking…
I supports this. It’s kind of like masks…..it serves as a warning sign to the rest of us to avoid any interaction with this mentality unstable person. Have you heard about these people who think that they’re cats? They “meow”, wear tails and even demand litter boxes. It’s only getting started folks!
Lol the sad part is this is actually true. I saw on the news a few big public school districts throughout the country propose adding litter boxes. Who knows if they’ll actually get added but the fact people in positions of power are even discussing that is insanity.
What is happening to our society?
The litter box in schools story was a hoax. Maybe find a reputable news source.
Yeah not gonna happen, remember the RIght’s base is heavily low information less educated voters…they believe just about any stupid thing MTG or Newsmax or My Pillow Guy serves up.
Not unlike the libs who take everything this administration or MSNBC says as indisputable truth.
So basically they are informing the public if they are mentally ill.
Bingo.
Wonder if DeSantis will allow those nametags in Florida.
A tempest in a teapot. When was the last time any of us had to use a pronoun in a conversation with a flight attendant or gate agent? This is a non-issue except for old-man-shakes-fist-at-clouds types that need something to gripe about. I have bigger concerns than correctly addressing the person I’m conversing with in the third person.
It’s now clear who the narcissists are.
I’ll just address them as waitress / waiter in the future until they figure this mess out.
The proper terminology for a creature that is neither male nor female is “it.”
Moreover, “she” and “her” are term to refer to someone in the third person, when speaking to a third party.
I am certainly not going to be told what to say in a conversation by someone who isn’t in the room.
Maybe we’ll soon be artificial intelligence beings…
Oh FFS
What is wrong with the world?
I’m not addressing them in the 3rd person….if you really wanted to make sense of this and for this to be of any value you would put the gendered “ma’am” or “sir” so I know how to appropriately address YOU. But this is not meant to be functional, it’s to affirm people’s feelings and to keep others on notice that they are a special case and the world should revolve around them. And I’m speaking as a member of the LGBTQ community.
UA -NYC once again showing his ignorance. But then again this is a person who idolizes Main stream media and believes the DNC is above reproach. Liberal, Progressive policies are failing this country on a wide array of issues, such as crime, race relations, immigration and the economy. This once proud nation is faltering badly.
So STUPID.
DIE is nothing but horses***.
And corporate America has fallen for this nonsense.
I’m glad I’m retired…
My pronouns are fat/drunk/stupid, please use the appropriately or I will be mortally offended.
The only thing that should be under employee’s name should be there position at the airline not pronouns this is getting ridiculous!!!! They can use the pronouns on there on time not during work hours
ummmm. No real need for this.
the effects of microplastics, atrazine, wi-fi, bluetooth, cellular radiation marches on.
“I just love those plastic pyramid shaped tea bags….some hot water please.”
