United Airlines Unveils New Uniforms at Newark Airport

Matthew Klint Posted onMay 21, 2013December 9, 2016 15 Comments

As part of its commemoration of 25 years in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines set up a catwalk this morning in order showcase new uniforms for pilots, FAs, and ground staff.

With CEO Jeff Smisek on-hand, the new uniforms were modeled and will debut on June 25th, finally bringing an end to the visible barrier separating ex-Continental crews and staff from those of legacy United.

Here’s a few pictures from the event, courtesy of United (and note the first picture was taken at Chicago O’Hare):

FAs I have talked to do not like the new uniforms–they say they are cheaply made, expensive, and not as professional looking as they would have liked.

I am rather indifferent to them–these are not eye-catching uniforms, but they are not bad. I prefer traditional uniforms, like the second picture above, but the blue dress isn’t bad. I appreciate that pilots will have the legacy United necktie and I hope we will see more wearing their hats.

One thing I really do not like is the sweater–it looks tacky, like US Airways. And the yellow ties and scarves that will be worn by Global Services agents are nice, but that is “Lufthansa yellow” and I have to wonder why United would choose a color that is not present in its corporate color scheme.

Will new uniforms boost morale? Perhaps–at least temporarily. But I think morale has been generally higher lately and I’ve been very pleased with United the last couple months. Leadership still flows down from the top and it is up to Smisek and his inner-circle to motivate his “co-workers” to excel still further.

And by the way, I meant the uniforms, not the article!

The sweater and blue dress are the only noticeable changes I see on flight crews. UGS agents now have the yellow scarves and gray suits.

I think the yellow ties are representative of the golden color in-use on the UA787s, right?

    Agree … very boring uniforms.
I wonder how well the baby blue shirts will go over with the ramp crews.

CO has always used yellow as the accent color (in lieu of the official gold) in many places. Just glance at the Newnited home page. Many times I’ve wondered why they didn’t just drop gold and go with yellow. Off the top of my head, the only place I can think of where the accent is gold, and would be truly hideous as yellow, is the bingo cage on the aircraft tails.

Gold is the secondary/accent color for the new UA brand, carried over from CO. Think the gold stripe on the plane belly and on sCO uniforms.

@ptahcha: But doesn’t the UGS accent color look like LH canary yellow and not the gold you mention?

This was covered on NJ.com, the main New Jersey Newspaper. Note the comments that those who know United / Continental out of EWR are saying. United has a long term PR issue to deal with.

Just like all the other ones…..ugly! I don’t know if Jeff has seen his flight attendants, but they wont fit into that blue dress

Mud Brown, Uninspired, and without any redeeming style (try raising your arms in the sheath)-did we say mud brown? What’s happened to brand pride? Shame on United…
